North Americans don't just add state names after cities for the benefit of foreigners, btw. I spent Christmas in Canada and had to refer to New Brunswick, New Jersey, since the province of Canada I was in was also called New Brunswick. Tbf, I've seen a lot more arrogance in the UK than I have over here so far.

Are you able to detect arrogance from so high up in your lofty position?

:dunno:

Well, you just have to look at the attitude towards the Americans from some Englishmen as opposed to their attitude towards us, which is far less condescending. Maybe they're a little more ignorant, but not arrogant. It's the same with the French. People think they're all assholes who hate Americans and the English, etc, when in fact they're pretty nice when you get over there and meet them. They even talk our language.

Guess it depends on the people. The Americans I've worked with are some of the most astonishingly arrogant people I've met. They are only sent over to save failing projects though, so it might be a dispostion fed by their role.

You know what does my head in about Yanks, they'll put "Portland, Oregon" like people are supposed to know Oregon is in USA. I only know it is because of the NIKE factory. Why don't they says Portland, USA? They say London, England, like England has the same significance as a fuckin US state, despite our capital being recognised as THE world capital. Why say London, England? There's no other London. We don't say New York, New York unless we're singing old Frankie's songs. Yanks do my head in. I'm not getting at you mate, but your country does my head in.

This Claudio Pitbull, do you really think if he was that good at 26 they'd be sending him on loan. In 12 years, we've went from breaking the World Transfer record on strikers, to spending coppers on players who are loaned out of the second best club in Europe's 9th best league.

Depends. From a UK perspective you'd say Portland, USA (city, country) or Lagos, Nigeria etc etc. But you wouldn't say Leeds, England, would you? You'd say Leeds, Yorkshire. A yank might not have a clue where Yorkshire is, so he'd want you to clarify it as Leeds, England, same as you might not have a clue where Oregon is and you want it clarified as Portland, USA.

When talking about your own country you use state/county designations in general I'd say, and when talking about foreign countries you don't since you're not likely to know them.

p.s. there are lots of Londons in the USA. Lots of Yorks, lots of Carlisles, lots of Newcastles, lots of many English town names.

p.p.s. you do say New York, New York. the first is the city, the second is the state. not just in songs after all :dunno:
