ohhh_yeah 2991
Allardyce told: £2m for Haim By Alan Nixon 04/01/2008 Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce has had his loan bid for Chelsea's Tal Ben Haim turned down - and been told he will have to buy him. Allardyce, battling to save his job, is also after colourfully named Porto striker Claudio Pitbull. Tough Israeli Ben Haim, whom Allardyce signed when at Bolton, is seen as the man to solve Toon's defensive problems while Pitbull could be the answer up front, where Michael Owen and Mark Viduka are plagued by injuries. But Chelsea are looking for around £2million for the well-respected Ben Haim, whom they signed for nothing last summer. He will not be allowed to leave on loan despite the arrival of Serbian Branislav Ivanovic, who will push him further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge. It is a blow to under-pressure Allardyce, who has been given money to spend in January transfer window. Striker Pitbull - whose full name is Claudio Mejolaro but goes by his nickname - is currently on loan at Portuguese club Vitoria Setubal. Pitbull, born in Brazil but with a Portuguese passport, is keen to move to the Premier League. The 26-year-old said: "I hope I get this opportunity because England's league is famous around the world."

You know what does my head in about Yanks, they'll put "Portland, Oregon" like people are supposed to know Oregon is in USA. I only know it is because of the NIKE factory. Why don't they says Portland, USA? They say London, England, like England has the same significance as a fuckin US state, despite our capital being recognised as THE world capital. Why say London, England? There's no other London. We don't say New York, New York unless we're singing old Frankie's songs. Yanks do my head in. I'm not getting at you mate, but your country does my head in. This Claudio Pitbull, do you really think if he was that good at 26 they'd be sending him on loan. In 12 years, we've went from breaking the World Transfer record on strikers, to spending coppers on players who are loaned out of the second best club in Europe's 9th best league. Guest alex
Btw, if Ben Haim was worth getting for nowt on what would have been a 4 year deal (or similar) he must be worth £2m. Although I dread to think what his wages are.

NobbySol 22
I disagree with most an reckon ben haim would be a poor signing. Every chelsea game i have watched hes been slow of his feet, very poor at challenging for the head and let it bounce to often.

Every chelsea game i have watched hes been slow of his feet, very poor at challenging for the head and let it bounce to often. I think he's a bit unsettled at Chelsea. I saw him at Bolton and he was a rock. I think he'd stroll into our current side and would be an excellent partner for Cacapa. Taylor on the bench until Beye and Faye return form international duty. We've also got defensive problems, too. Most of them caused by our inability to keep the ball in the opposition's half away from our goal for sufficient periods and the rest caused by our lack of a cohesive unit at the back. I don't really believe that the defenders we have are that lacking in quality if they were correctly moulded together.

Guest alex
It's probably to distinguish between the other Portlands in North America btw (I know there's another in Maine for example). Most towns / cities have duplicate names given they're normally named after places in the 'old world'. So Portland, USA wouldn't tell you much. And states are effectively countries in their own right, as opposed to Ashford, Middlesex/Kent.
Barney 0
Chelsea boss Avram Grant has ruled out allowing any players to leave the club during the transfer window. Wayne Bridge has been linked with a shock move to Liverpool, while Newcastle have been credited with an interest in Tal Ben Haim. Grant says he has no plans to lose any members of his squad as he is happy with the players at his disposal. "Every week somebody is writing about players coming to us, or players leaving us and then I need to comment on it," said Grant. "There is no news. "I am happy with the squad. All the players in the squad will stay until the end of the season. " Grant was also remaining coy on any incomings at Stamford Bridge with the Blues continually being linked with moves for the likes of Nicolas Anelka and Dimitar Berbatov. The Chelsea chief is not surprised by the speculation, but he rejected suggestions that Chelsea had been warned off making a move for Tottenham ace Berbatov. Speculation "There is a lot of speculation but the situation is the same as it was two weeks ago, one week ago, three weeks ago. "I can tell you there's no news on any of this speculation about players coming to Chelsea. "How can they say to tell us to stay away from a player (Berbatov) when we have not even discussed him? So it looks very strange. "For the moment there is a lot of speculation and I understand it because we have a lot of injuries and players going to African Cup. "As I told you about a week ago, two weeks ago there is no news for the moment."

Well, you just have to look at the attitude towards the Americans from some Englishmen as opposed to their attitude towards us, which is far less condescending. Maybe they're a little more ignorant, but not arrogant. It's the same with the French. People think they're all assholes who hate Americans and the English, etc, when in fact they're pretty nice when you get over there and meet them. They even talk our language.
