Scotland: The most violent country.

A mate of mine was in the police and was posted to N Shields

First Saturday night the phone rang and the desk Sergeant looked at his watch and said "pick it up. lad - it'll be the Jungle"

They all went down the Bank and there were a herd of coppers and two dog handlers - inside people were having chairs broken over their heads (contrary to Hollywood its the heads that break not the chairs), stuff coming through the window......

They all lunged at the door but the Sarge kept them back "give them another 5 minutes" - then they put the dogs in

As the customers (male, female, in between and norwegians) spilt onto the pavement it was a thwack on the head with a truncheon and throw them into the van...........................

He got quite used to it over a three year period...............

I think that Kaiser Chiefs song sums it up perfectly - Saturday night.

What about, Down in the Tubestation at Midnight - The Jam?

'I first felt a fist and then a kick, I could now smell their breath.

They smelt of pubs, and Wormword scrubs and too many right-wing meetings.'

True.

Big bruv was also in 'the force' for a time in Shields. I remember him telling me he beat the shit out of some drunk for puking on his uniform when being put into the cells!

Correct. I wondered who was cultured enough to know what I had taken it from.

How mis-guided could I have been?

When I was a kid I can remember seeing a couple of REALLY big fights in the main street of N Shields - one was outside Woolworths... Saturday lunchtime - about 20 a side and a couple of hundred goggling watchers

The law were wading in with their truncheons and with horses and they were driving the old Black Maria's down the street with coppers hanging off the back grabing participants they went by and dragging them behind the van to get sorted out down the street

These days you'd have a million reporters there - which IIRC was one of the causes of the great Shields riots of the 1970's........

I think it was "Disturbance in N Shields" - 1 para on page 20 of the Gonagle that night

Those were the days - Tradition, respect for the Law, no filthy immigrants........
