I need help with buying some music software for my sons christmas present

He is 16 and has inherited my passion for music, and I am pleased to say my musical education as he grew up has paid off as he has impeccable taste, a lot of early punk, Clash Buzzcocks Undertones, and the American bands that inspired punk, Stooges Mc5 NYDolls, he bloody loves Johnny Thunders, Primal Scream ,Muse(well nobodies perfect}

He plays guitar is in acouple of bands,including an online collaboration with some americans, who fancy having him as vocalist. To be blunt his singing aint as good as his guitar playing and I was wondering if there was any sort off vocal tuning software available that any of you muso types might be able to recomend. If it comes with some sort of online mixing/recording package so much the better. Realising how little I know about this stuff is making me very old - so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tuning software tends to come as a plug-in to a main sequencer package.

As with most musical purchases, it all depends on cash- there are things out there for free but if you want better quality sound- it costs.

Also what sort of spec PC will this be running on (it will be quite demanding on the PC's resources).

Jimbo- they're OK for recording and processing but won't be much cop for pitch correction. Adobe Audition is a cracking programme but the pitch shifts in there are awful.

The market leader is the Antares Autotune, but as a plugin that costs £250 (VST format). You can get free VST host programs.

This is a free pitch correction tool http://www.gvst.co.uk/gsnap.htm

Sadly, I think you're likely to be stuck between the homebrew and super-professional, there doesn't seem to be much in between.

I can hook you up with autotune for free, but I know that's not really as exciting as a boxed present. But I could get you all the music software he'd ever need if you wanted. PM, obviously.

It might be worth going into somewhere like Sound Control. They do music software, and I've found they're quite helpful for advice etc. The Newcastle branch is on Mosley Street.

If you're not in Newcastle, they've got other branches.

Here's the Store Locator website.
