bawan 0
Manchester United's Jonny Evans has been released on police bail after being quizzed over the alleged rape of a woman at the club's Christmas party. The 19-year-old international was arrested yesterday following the party at the exclusive Great John Street Hotel in Manchester. He has been bailed until February 23 pending further inquiries. Police were called to the hotel shortly after 4am after receiving a report that a 26-year-old woman had been raped. A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said the man was arrested on suspicion of rape later that day after voluntarily presenting himself for questioning. "We did have an event on Monday night. We're helping the police with an investigation," a hotel spokeswoman said. Evans, a defender, spent last season on loan at Sunderland. He has played for Northern Ireland eight times but has not got a regular place in Manchester United's first team. Sky's north of England correspondent Tom Parmenter said: "The entire first-team squad, apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, had been out around town celebrating their annual Christmas party. "It started on Monday lunchtime at a nearby casino where they were entertained by burlesque dancers. "They then moved on to the Old Grapes pub which is owned by Liz Dawn, the Coronation Street actor." A number of players then ended up at the Great John Street Hotel. The hotel is a boutique "town house" converted from a Victorian schoolhouse in the upmarket Castlefield area of Manchester. Several allegations of rape have emerged from parties involving Premiership stars over the last few years. But none have led to a conviction. Ian Dovaston, Sky's sports news correspondent, said football managers dreaded the party season because their players are targets. "Managers are pretty cool about these kind of parties, they know their footballers are potential targets - they are young people who earn a lot of money and get a lot of attention. "We have seen that so many times in the past. "The players know that Sir Alex Ferguson is not a great supporter of these big groups getting together - but there is a compromise to be found at Christmas."
