Barney 0
City cool on Owen swoop Dec 13 2007 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle MANCHESTER City have pulled the plug on a January move for Newcastle United striker Michael Owen. And this has stopped Sam Allardyce from having to search for a replacement for his £17m striker. Big Sam has not been letting the grass grow under his feet, and he has admitted to the Chronicle this week that he has been in touch with City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson to find out what his intentions were regarding Owen. And the word from the North West is that City owner Thaksin Shinawatra has put the block on any move for Owen because of the England international’s recent injury problems. The striker – who is 28 tomorrow – has only started 21 games for United since Graeme Souness and Freddy Shepherd paid £17m to bring him to St James’s Park for £17m on the eve of the 2005 season. And last night Souness made a thinly-disguised attack on Owen as he praised Wayne Rooney’s attitude on Sky Television before Manchester United’s Champions League game with Roma. The whole situation at St James’s Park is complicated, not only as far as the strikers are concerned but also with the rest of the team, by the impending African Cup of Nations when Oba Martins, Geremi, Habib Beye and Abdoulaye Faye will all be missing. That’s why Allardyce has contacted Eriksson, knowing how much the former England manager rates the player who did so well for him in the white shirt of his country. It’s easy to see why a move to the North West would appeal to Owen now that he has opened his own racing stable near his native Chester. And, in 12 months’ time, Owen will be free to talk to other clubs, with his contract at St James’s Park due to expire in the summer of 2009. Allardyce has some important decisions to make over the next couple of weeks. He knows that both Middlesbrough and Norwich City want Shola Ameobi, who has only started one game in the Premier League for him. Martins could miss six games, while Australia want to welcome Mark Viduka back into their fold at a time when the last thing the 32-year-old striker needs is a lot of travelling. The bright spots for Allardyce as far as his strikers are concerned are the form of Martins and the return of Owen in time for the busy holiday period. And while it is over two years since Alan Smith last weighed in with a goal in the Premier League, the 27-year-old England international has done well up front in the past couple of games. That first bit in bold, anyone know what dickhead said?

toontoasey 0
I reckon Souness has a very intense dislike for anything to do with our club and always will and will stir the shite anyway he can.

Tribal 0
Was Parker a flop? I know I'd rather have him in midfield ahead of Smith / Barton / Geremi at the moment.
tinofbeans 91
fucking hell. all of those signings were overpriced shit. except nobby. glad we made our money back on parker. he was "very hard working" but not much else. couldn't pass the ball well enough! luckyluke 2
Solano was a no brainer. Fan favourite and player of the year in his season at Villa. It's like giving Souness credit for playing Shearer up front.
RlCO 0
I would go so far as to say Souness probably didn't want him, but fat boy couldn't resist the PR coup.

Although as some have said I'd have him over Alan Smith in the midfield.
Offshore Toon 0
Parker wasn't a bad signing because he was great in the first season and we sold him for just as much as we bought him for. He gave his all, but in the end, it simply wasn't to be.
