Ketsbaia 0
The powers-that-be at St James' Park yesterday moved to publicly dispel any lingering uncertainty over the future of Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce. Allardyce has received boardroom assurances that he will be given time to revive the fortunes of the Tyneside club with his paymasters expressing confidence that he will invigorate St James' Park. Newcastle chairman Chris Mort spoke out in support of Allardyce following an "incredibly satisfying" 1-1 draw with Arsenal that allowed the former Bolton manager to breathe a sigh of relief after a run of four defeats and a draw prompted talk he was on the brink of being sacked just six months into a three-year deal. "Sam and I met and we knew we had to put things right," said Mort, who runs the club for billionaire owner Mike Ashley. We were both very keen to go out and do well against Arsenal. Maybe it might not have happened last night but we knew eventually it would turn round. "But we were never going to isolate things on one game or say a time when we would do something. It would be wrong to judge the team on a particular fixture although I'm not going to ignore the fact we had some bad results lately. "Last night was a fabulous fixture and the team is going to need time to get things right and we're going to give them time to get it right. We will get it right eventually." Mort revealed sports retail tycoon Ashley had savoured his team's gritty show against Arsenal. "We have an ambitious manager, an ambitious owner and ambitious chairman, and we all want to head in the right direction," Mort added, "Mike loved it last night. He had a great night." Mort insisted Allardyce had not been given a deadline to hoist a club, currently 11th in the Premier League, into the top half of the table, which should happen soon with forthcoming fixtures against struggling Birmingham, Fulham, Derby and Wigan or Allardyce could find himself the pressure intensifies once more. Mort continued: "We started the season with the best start we've had in 10 years. We then had five games where we got one point. Then we played the top-of-the-table team and deserved to beat them. "We did exactly what we had to do and got in amongst them. We performed in a way that is incredibly satisfying for everybody connected with Newcastle. We are all thrilled with the performance. If anybody was going to win it was us." Mort paid tribute to supporters who raucously responded to his rallying call to back Allardyce and his team ahead of the Arsenal game in the wake of home defeats by Portsmouth and Liverpool. "The fans were perfect but that didn't surprise me at all," Mort said. "We went 1-0 down and they absolutely supported their team. "As we said throughout, the Newcastle fans can have a massive influence to what happens on the pitch. They did that." For goalkeeper Shay Given, who hit the roof earlier this week when it was claimed he had confronted Allardyce over the club's direction, the Arsenal game was confirmation of solidarity in the Newcastle ranks. "The performance against Arsenal proved everyone is united, that we're sticking together and we're all behind the manager," Given said. "That's what has to happen to get the club moving forward again. We've had some bad results and when you're a big club like Newcastle, the pressure mounts on the team and on the manager." Given is adamant his colleagues must summon up the energy to repeat their exploits against Arsenal when they welcome Birmingham tomorrow. "All the players worked their socks off and we need that against Birmingham which is a massive game," Given said. "We'll need to if we're going to get a good result because Birmingham are on a high after their result at Tottenham." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtm...7/sfnnew107.xml

Away to Bolton, home to Spurs, Everton, West Ham and maybe even Wigan. Granted not every game but indeed not just the one.

Dr Gloom 22542
i thought with the additions to the squad that we'd do better this season than last time around. it's the tactics, selections, negative use of subs and the way big sam has set the team out that has been most disappointing. like others have said, we've looked as bad, if not worse than we did under roeder and souness. early days but i think most of us expected at least a small improvement. i hope the recent run of results was a blip but i can't remember us playing well at all this season, even when we were winning games. Aye, sure someone posted a link to some stats thats showed that high pass rate meant nowt for Big Sams Bolton team. I expect for the team not to play that great most of the season but still pick up the points for just a top half finish.

Gejon 2
I wouldn't say so, its more than just bad luck why the relegation battlers are where they are. Its because they have all been worse than us so far this season.
Ken 119
It's great to know he has the backing of the players and admin, but his longetivity in the job will depend on the next 6 games. If the crowd get on his back again, he'll be oot the door. Here's hoping he has the lads revved up, and ensures that the performance against Arsenal isn't just a one off. We've been very inconsistent rather than consistently bad which points more to mid-table mediocrity than anything else.
