Worth a punt if he's not going to cost too much. You'd have to see it as a risky buy, though.

Perhaps cheaper and more suited to our needs would be Alexei Eremenko jr. (if we're raiding the Russian leagues). He's young, has played in Europe before, and is now a regular for Finland. He can play as an attacking midfielder, winger, or striker. Two-footed, has a good delivery of the ball, also known as a bit of a freekick specialist.

Was thinking last night we're kind of lacking in that area now, although Geremi struck one quite nicely last night. Oh for the days where we had Nobby, Robert and Shearer standing over the ball...

Exactly... our delivery into the box has been lacking for a while. Freekicks, corners, crossing in general. Alright, Milner and Martins are new to the 4-3-3 way of playing, but their delivery from crosses could be a lot better.

As it happens, Eremenko played as part of a front 3 at Lecce, so the system wouldn't be alien to him.

Is he a CM/FM legend though? That's the deal maker or breaker for me :nufc:

Ive wondered this myself, seems to play anywhere across the middle for russia but he plays a the right sided player in the front three at his club, for me he is definatly a player we should be moving heaven and earth for! Top class! And i agree he is a wee bit beardsleyesque!

Didn't score all season though.

Was playing more as a wide man, but yeah, fair point. He's not been a prolific goal scorer anywhere he's played. For Finland he's averaged a goal every 3 games, which is about his best record. In the Russian Premier its been a goal every 4 games. Still not bad considering the role he plays in a team. He's not an out-and-out striker, but he can certainly play there. For us I'd see him more as a wide player/attacking midfielder.

After watching the vid on Youtube and seeing him play for Russia, he is very similar in style to a certain Mr Beardsley.

And Luque :nufc:

but is he a left winger or a striker?

Left-sided striker.

Arshavin admits English interest

Russian skpper would take Premier switch

By Slava Zaitsev

Arshavin: Keen on move

Andrei Arshavin has confirmed that he would relish the chance to play in England.

The 26-year-old midfielder has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League, with the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal, Everton and Newcastle all linked. "Of course I want to play in England," stated the Russian captain when asked about the interest. Arshavin's club Zenit St Petersburg, who won the Russian championship last season, are keen for him to stay but their director of sport Konstantin Sarsania has confirmed there is interest in him. Sarsania admitted that both Newcastle and Everton had been tracking him.

"Newcastle, Everton and Marseille were interested in Arshavin. Also a few other European football agents asked us about terms of his transfer. But we didn't receive any official offer," he told the Russian press. "Also I know that Newcastle and Everton scouts visited our games to watch Andrei." Zenit have already sold Martin Skrtel to Liverpool during this month and Arshavin is hoping he will follow his former team-mate to Britain. "Arshavin is well known in Europe by many great European clubs," his agent Pavel Andreev told Arshavin's official website.

"We have actually transferred power of attorney so that we can let an English agency do the serious negotiations. They will communicate the interest with any clubs for Andrei and once we have information we will report it." Andreev admitted there was interest from British clubs but he would not confirm their identities.

That would have been under Sam though, not sure if Keegan will take the risk going abroad in this window maybe in the summer when he can give players the chance to settle in.

Who did we get? Viduka and Barton, half a year later.

Wish I could get a refund on every paper I'd bought that printed a transfer that never happened. They should be accountable.

I know what your saying but how many of those actually had valid quotes from there agents confirming out interest? Not many would by my guess....papers band names about on a daily basis, few actually have substantial quotes backing them up!

And yes i know SNN is rapidly becoming an unfounded rumour mill, but they do get it right sometimes. And with quotes from arshavins agent we got to be optimistic and pleased we are actually in the running!

I know i know but its good to know that a player of his calibre has recognised our interest. So it means we are actually in the running doesnt it? Do you guys think we could actually get him? He is the new beardsley imo.

So what Leningrad is part of Tyneside now?

so. Big Sam was after this guy.

and i watched him play against Bayern Leverkusan this afternoon and he was by far the best player on the pitch. fast, agile, two footed, excellent appreciation of his team mates, selfless.

he has incredible quality.

and at the price that was thrown about (7 million?) would be an absolute steal based on this performance and how highly rated he is within Russia.

thoughts?
