Crikey. My favourite group is Free, so on that basis I'd say Paul Rodgers. Why restrict this to rock music though ? Does anyone have a case for classical singers, for instance ? There are many singers that aren't my cup of tea, but I would acknowledge they are great voaclists.

Some of the Tamla Motown singers, especially Levi Stubbs and Diana Ross [which I also like], were simply brilliant too.

I've not read the whole thread but Rodgers was my first thought too. I've seen him live too - makes the hair stand on your arms.

Apologies if these are duplicated (I'm sure they must be by now) but here's a few who I think should be up there (not all of them are my taste, but they are clearly good):

1. Mercury (obviously)

2. Cocker

3. The guy from Hootie and the Blowfish

4. Jon Bon Jovi

5. When not being a dick, Axl Rose had a fair range on him and carried the power behind it

6. In his day, Rodger Daltry

7. Robert Plant

It's easy to list a few who are very good, but for me Rodgers takes it. I think with Freddie you have to separate the fact he was such a showman and compare his vocals pound for pound against the others. He still fairs well like!

As for female singers, none of the warbly ones should really be considered as despite their talents they blow it by warbling all over the place. Ask them to hold a single note for a sustained period of time. Now that's clever! Aretha Franklin managed to be good without warbling all over.

Nat King Cole by a country mile. I don't often listen to him but is voice is absolutely fantastic.

Dean Martin wasn't too shabby either, far superior to Sinatra.

Yeah, I'd say they deserve a mention too. Agree with the sentiments of Martin over Sinatra too.

I've got a quality old vinyl album of Nat King Cole and Dean Martin singing Xmas songs. Absolutely class it is. Can't believe I forgot Marvin Gave and Smokey Robinson btw. Love Martha Reeves and Dionne Warwick too.

Serious. The song 'Run To You' by Whitney just proves her as having the best voice ever. Chorus=immense.

I used to like it (years ago now :D ) when Sasha used to layer acapella versions of her songs over house tracks. Her old pop stuff is canny. 'I Will Always Love You' did my head in though. Did you see James Blunt on Top Gear btw? Canny funny tbf.

Aye, over-played syndrome that. I tend to avoid that song, as well as I wanna dance with somebody. Didn't see the top gear. His sense of humour or personality doesn't interest me anyway, I just like his music :D

Tbf to Blunt, I watched Top Gear and he seemed fairly down to Earth and likeable. He also has a (speaking and singing) voice of a little girl.

He admitted his songs are rubbish, which rather makes a mockery of Mr Co Durham's aggressive defence of them though. :D

Hey you don't like Patrokles/Verlaine/Ben fine but don't go dishin' Elizabeth Fraser.

Although to be fair, he does deserve a little poke for daring to mention Marissa Nadler in a list of all-time greats. Nice girl, lovely voice, but howay now. :D

Cheeky sod! Don't forget how you even know who she is.

Also, Martin!

all fairly noteworthy vocalists, some of whom could lay claim to 'best ever,' but that's really way too subjective to call. A couple are only really good because their voices just work with the lyrics and music. But most have fantastic voices.

Fair enough. I may have stopped reading your post halfway through. :D

Expected better from you, tbh. :D

Well, the thread's called "greatest vocalist of all time". I suggested two, others have gone for several, but there's a limit to how much the brain can take in of a long list of names.

And yes, I know you ultimately didn't claim they were all in line for the title, but you know what I mean. :icon_lol:
