Fop 1
More shite in the name of religion... Stereophonics have got it pretty much spot-on in the lyrics of their latest single. "Religion is shite, it makes people want to kill other people over teddy bears names"? Catchy. "Religious debates are almost as stupendously dull as we are", I think. Mine is better. "Come on, bring on the starvation and disease! that will get the numbers dropping!" fucking hell This planet will be an interesting place with 9 billion on it by 2050-2075 and in fairness many of the world problems stem from larger overpopulation and/or a population expanding far too rapidly for infrastructure to keep up, never mind better peoples lives. The unfortunate thing is none of the solutions are particularly palatable.
The Fish 11042
Firmly believe that it's not possible to have an international court when things like this can happen. How can we punish citizens on an international stage, when similar human rights violations like this, are occurring in countries across the globe, not only without condemnation of the ruling party, but active encouragement? I'm not a world policy scholar (no surprise there) but surely this breaches any number of her human rights, isn't this a perfect example of when international law, the UN et al should get involved. Instead of the dictating the size and placement of South Korea's flag at the next trade meeting, they should be rescuing this woman from an outdated and frankly ludicrous judicial system? I'm all for a diverse world, but certain societies seem intent on trying to govern a modern world with stone age tactics, isn't this an opportunity for the more permissive, open minded governments to have a tinder box of their own. Dislodge the outmoded system and emplace a more progressive, less reactionary governing body? I' mean how could it possibly go wrong?

While I know its everyones right to have a child (just women surely? hang on ... python moment here....), but if a child is going to come into the world into poverty and disease then perhaps it would be better off to being. Id start with the charvas

Id start with the charvas Aye but they tried that in China, it didn't really work out so good. Although ironically in this country we are at a stable to just slightly down turning population, if you disregard immigration anyway, even with 10 chav families. NJS 4442
An individual person's death is always a tragedy which I always have sympathy with but from a big picture pov - KCG is right - unless over-population is tacked the human race is doomed. Even a bird flu pandemic killing 50m wouldn't scratch the surface - we need to lose 2bn people as a starting point imo. I know I sound like a callous bastard but I honestly believe the quality of life for the people who "survive" the next 100 years demands action - there the ones I care about. Of course the problem is that unless theres a helping hand from mother nature (super volcano, asteroid, death of the jet stream etc) then a joint approach by all the worlds countries would be needed which isn't going to happen until we actually face something catastrophic. Even if every country in the EU introduced universal birth control, people would escape to pro-create and you couldn't legislate for the ignorant 3rd world religious countries. Our "best hope" in the long run is either catastrophic climate change, a virulent man made virus or planetary escape.

NJS 4442
You go first then. I'm 43 and have no kids - maybe 30 years left if I'm lucky so I consider myself unbiased which is why I do care about the medium/long term. On the whole I lean towards what KCG was suggestion and mirroring modern medicine instead of aggressively pursuing the policy at first we just don't try too hard when illness/disaster strikes.
