This "don't play your new signings for 10 matches" theory/excuse kind of falls flat on its face when you think of Man City this season doesn't it !

For everyone who quotes Citeh as an example of how things should be at this club i'm going to kill a kitten. They're quite simply a one off and could've so easily ended up in our position.

coulda woulda shoulda

things is they didnt, either because they've got a better manager or are a better run club. Either way there's no reason why we shouldnt compare our fortunes to there's this season.

I'm not saying we "should" be in Man City's position, I'm arguing that the "keep them out for 10 matches" is cobblers.

They still could (they've played some good matches, but a lot of their points have come from narrow wins which could have gone another way quite easily - I'd say they "should" currently be only 1-2 places above us all things being equal). Otherwise Sunderland would have won the Champions League eventually under Reid. ;)

From what I saw the three new lads mentioned were the least of the problems on Saturday. The "proven premiership stars" he brought in were most to blame for the shambles, Geremi, Smith, Viduka.

Whilst I am not saying Geremi didn't have a stinker, he spent the whole match overexposed and was always on a hiding to nothing.

Difference is City have been able to build on a good centre back pairing in the very solid Richard Dunne and excellent young Micah Richards (although the way knee's have been jerking recently I am sure he is now seen as average ;) )

Our back line has changed quite a bit through injury and not wanting to chuck young/foreign players in too early (something many moaned that past managers did too much).

Also not claiming he is any sort of Messiah but we have missed Barton who imo is our best central midfielder (in the final third at the very least). Can't claim to have seen City every game this season but they seem to have quite a solid/set first 11 and their best attacking players (Elano, Petrov) have been fit and playing.

Allardyce definitely has to take a fair bit of the blame for the season so far but there are other issues which make it a little unfair to look at things just in black and white.

He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy. <_<

Yep they haven't had the injuries (but then who ever had NUFC like injuries) and largely it was a fairly settled team that has been build on.

Where as we've got a completely new defence that can't seem to be settled (for form and injury) and a midfield that in many important respects doesn't seem to exist.

There's certainly something in what Sam has said about all the new defenders being thrown in together and it not working out that well, he can blame that to an extent.

But half the defences problems are coming because of his tactics leaving us offering nothing in attack and midfield so the defence have far more to cope with.
