Did the FA really NEED to put a pay out clause in McClaren's contract??

...what, like it was a deal breaker for him.... ? :crylaughin:

It was the FA protecting themselves after Sven I think - i.e. if McLaren was sacked he 'only' got a year's salary, i.e. £2.5m instead them having to pay up his whole contract. There was something about it in the Telegraph after the Russia game apparently. He was contracted until 2010.

Any FA should insert a clause into a manager's contract that should they fail to qualify for a major tournament then the FA reserve the right to dispense with their services without paying out any compensation.

Or that the manager's contract runs until the end of the qualifying campaign, where it can be renewed if necessary. Which is essentially the same thing.

you can't really blame mclaren for taking the job, or holding out for the compensation. who in their right mind would resign when they could pick up £2.5m for waiting 24 hours and suffering the inevitable?

the fa truly are a bunch of old fuckwits though. it's just like when we appointed souness. it was SO obvious that mcclaren was never going to be the man for the job. i've got to say though not even i thought he'd fuck up in quite so spectacular style. he has to go down as one of the worst english managers ever when you consider he blew the lifeline that israel undeservedly gave us.

True; it's the FA's fault that he gets the cash.

But I still hate him.

Something along these lines would be good.

As he was leaving the boro job (which will have had in it contractual obligations) it is understandable there will have been some kind of agreement in the new job. After all, a person is unlikely to leave a job for another with poorer conditions (there are exceptional circumstances I know, but it's unlikely).

Therefore, the clause is of no surprise. However, the FA were clearly burned by Sven so the tie in is much shorter. It is not unusual for Directors of large companies to be on 6 or 12months notice. If a company sacks a Director, they are entitled to the 6/12mths compensation unless the sacking is for a breach of contract.

Yeah but I think the point being made is that given the relative bargaining strengths of the two parties in this particular situation, it probably didnt actually need to go in. Ie McLaren would probably have accepted poorer terms...such as 'if you don't qualify then the contract is terminated there and then'. Possibly he wouldntnt have accepted this-but then if that was the case the FA look even worse as they appointed an incompetent (thus increasing the chances of not qualifying) AND gave him favourable terms in the event of us not qualifying.

The alternative response to McLaren driving a hard bargain on those terms might have been to tell him to fuck off.

The FA wanted him though. So it's not as though McLaren would have needed to do all the bargaining. Agreeing a notice period for a job is a necessary requirement. The FA would need to protect themselves also, to stop McLaren buggering off and leaving them in the lurch. I know that given the results, it would be unlikely, but in reality, all the FA have done is to agree a 12month notice period for the Manager of their 'company'.
