while on paddypower I had a look at the "Chris Coleman Specials"

Chris Coleman Specials

To be in charge of Real Sociedad at the end of the season 4 - 6

To be arrested because of driving drunk 25 - 1

J B Toshack to be Real Sociedad's manager before the end of this season 33 - 1

To sign C Bellamy in January 50 - 1

To sign J de Pedro in January 66 - 1

To miss the 1st half of Real Sociedad's next match due to sleeping late 200 - 1

wtf?

He was late for a conference the other week due to "washing machines troubles"......

Just read about that before lunch. Apparently the Spanish journo's caught him out in a nightclub the night before a game.

why, in gods name is Shearer more likely to get the England Job than established Managers like Allardyce and Redknapp?

Now I'm not saying either of those two should get the job, but surely they... with their experience and respect... should get it ahead of a bloke who's sole experience is helping Roeder get an average team to limp into european places?

I tihnk it's probably becuase there's been a big resurgence in giving young ex-players a crack at national team jobs straight away. Klinsman, Van Basten, Billic, Hughes, all went into international management with no experience but did an excellent job.

I'm not saying Shearer should get it, I'm just saying it's not as far fetched as you think it is when you look at recent history.

Why not Mr. Fish? inexperience doesn't mean failure at something you hadn't done before. Look at Kevin Keegan, he had never been in management before he came to Newcastle, in fact he had been out of game altogether for quite a while before he came to St.James.

Sometimes a person's stature as a very good player combined with character and high respect can bring something to the table at first sitting.

If you're talking about England managers, you really shouldn't be using Keegan as an example.

NO, I wasn't talking about England managers perse, I was talking about the lack of experience in a managerial position not necessarily being detrimental to success. Keegan was a big success at Newcastle and it was his first shot at management. Beginners luck perhaps, but I think it had a lot to do with his charisma and approach to the game, certainly not his managerial experience which was zero.

I know, I was only being facetious. However, for every Keegan there's a Southgate.

I meant why were the bookies offering shorter odds on Shearer, what makes him a more likely candidate? is it simply that he's not at a club already, or something else?

I have no idea if he'd be any good as England Manager because I've got no idea if he'd be any good at managing anywhere?

Sandi Toksvig on Friday night's "News Quiz":

"It's been promised that the FA will conduct a 'root-and-branch review' of the England team setup, led by the top banana of the FA, Brian Barwick. Meanwhile, the White Star Line have announced a root-and-branch review of the Titanic's maiden voyage, to be led by the iceberg."

I love Radio 4.
