Fitness Front: Duff Steps Up Comeback Bid

By Craig Hope

DAMIEN Duff has returned to full training this week following nearly seven months on the sidelines with a career-threatening foot injury.

The 28-year-old was last seen at Portsmouth back in April before limping from play with, what looked at the time, a fairly innocuous ankle knock.

But the injury was far worse than first feared and Duff has undergone two operations since then before his eventual return to training this week.

And the sight of the former Chelsea ace back in action is something which has pleased Toon boss Sam Allardyce.

"It's great to see Damien back in training." the United gaffer told Newcastle World TV.

"He's just starting to join in with the players and there will be a period of time when he gets used to training on a day-to-day basis.

"He'll have to get used to the physical contact first of all and from there we'll take it into a reserve match.

"Hopefully we'll have him back to the sort of level we know he can play at as quickly as possible.

"We're looking forward to having him back in the first-team squad because Damien is a player of undoubted class who can play a big part for us this season."

Duff was restricted to just 20 league starts for the Geordies last season and scored his only goal in black and white in the 2-0 win at West Ham in September, 2006.

i'm willing to bet that he'll never be the same player for us that he was for blackburn and chelsea.

I suspect you're right. Still think he could be a pretty useful player for us right now, though, what with us short on a bit of midfield invention.

i hope so, but he looked a spent force for us before he picked up a serious injury. if he's lost his pace, i don't see him being that much of an asset - in fact i'd probably play n'zogbia ahead of him unless he regains his chelsea form. hope i'm wrong like obviously

It has to be remembered that we judged him on his form for Roeder when very few players looked decent.

It has to be remembered that he came to us after not playing much football for Chelski for a long while (and was he injured there too) and then proceeded to never string enough games together for us to get anything like match sharpness back with repeated injury, before finally knackering himself completely in April till now.

If he can be brought back to full fitness, and if he can stay fit enough to get his match sharpness back, then maybe he can recapture that old form, and then maybe he can be like a new signing for us.

It's a plus like, if Sam persists in playing Zoggy at left back then Duff can play wide left. Unless of course Sam plays Milner wide left and plays Duff wide right. Of course he could have Duff partner Oba if he wanted to.

Duff coming back might complicate things. :crylaughin:

Yes, but it is better to options than have nought like we have at the minute.

Howay man; he's bound to see Enrique as his left-back in the long run.
