Big Sam challenge to Martins

Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has challenged Obafemi Martins to take full advantage of the injury to Michael Owen.

Owen picked up the thigh injury in England's friendly against Austria last week and has been sent to Germany for treatment.

Allardyce is keen to see Martins score more goals and record their first league win this month against Liverpool on Saturday.

Martins has made an appearance in every league game so far this season but Allardyce wants the Nigerian to add to his four goals.

Allardyce told the Daily Star: "I hope Oba can come in and start scoring the goals that Michael hasn't been recently, to be perfectly honest.

"I've been very pleased with Oba in recent weeks and I'm looking for him to link up with Mark Viduka or Shola Ameobi.

"The injury to Michael gives other players a chance to get in.

"I hope they take up that challenge and produce the sort of performances we know they are capable of."

And when Owen is fit does he have to wait for the chance to prove himself? :crylaughin:

When Owen is fit Martins will be off to the African cup for 2 months won't he?

I would say he proved himself last season finishing as the clubs top scorer. I think its Owen that needs to prove himself.

He must be getting sick by now, playing champions league football with Inter, banging the goals in when he gets here and then dropped week in week out for the 2 cripples that are viduka and owen. I wouldnt blame him if he told us to fuck right off.

Well 2.7 games played to 1 goal scored scoring ratio last season is ok, but not exactly world class either.

Shearer in comparison was 2:1 in his 2nd from last season and 3:1 in his last.

Owen had the highest ratio of goals scored to mins played in La Liga in his only proper season there.

So at the moment all that can really be said is that BOTH Owen and Martins need to score a LOT more if we are to get anywhere.

Im guessing that ratio includes all the games martins played for 10 mins as sub. And owens ratio will be better as he has only played 20 games.

You can twist the stats anyway you want. I dont think Martins has anything to prove. Hes shown what he can do. Its not his fault hes not getting a chance to keep showing it.

Nope Martins is for LAST season (this season is pretty pointless due to how he is being played, as it is for Owen really given the amount of injuries).

So his scoring ratio when he is being used as regular first choice needs to be at least 2:1 not closer to 3:1.

So you can try to AVOID it all you want, Martins needs to score a LOT more to even replace Shearer in his penultimate season, he was only just scoring more than Shearer in his last season.

Yup, he can score 1 goal in every 2.7 games as first choice striker - top 6 form that is not (whether he can do better, well THAT is to be seen).

Really if you look at it, it is arguable (if not practical) for BS to do to our attack what he did to our defence - although either way I don't think you can really judge any of our striker until we have a functioning midfield.

Martins is just as shit as Owen when he gets no service like. Something I noticed yesterday.

Exactly, it wouldnt matter who was up front, Martins, Owen, Pele, me granny, all would fail to score at the moment due to the lack of service.

Yesterday whether it was Viduka or Martins on the ball, much of the time they were isolated up front. More worryingly was the lack of support once this happened. We used to break on the counter very effectively, now the players either couldnt be arsed (which I dont think) or their instructions were not to leave the back exposed (more likely). Many times Geremi was on the ball with yards of open space in front of him and he didnt move forward with it. Reading comments from Sam, he was worried about the defence so seemed to have told the midfield to give them plenty of protection. The way this interpreted it seemed was that we soak up what we can. Which wasnt much against an effective attacking liverpool side.

So aye, no service at all for those up front. Then when they did have the ball they were quickly crowded out.

Yeah, which is what makes all striker comparisons fairly moot at the moment, until we have a functional midfield. I'm not even sure it's semi-functional in even a smash and grab sense (which wouldn't much suit Owen at least) never mind a more balanced attacking sense.
