Scottish Mag 3
Sam Allardyce has his scouts working overtime and is planning talks with Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley in order to set the financial wheels in motion ahead of the January transfer window. The Magpies have had a mixed start to the Premier League season and will be acutely aware that a number of players will be leaving their ranks for the African Cup of Nations in the New Year. Having arrived at St James’ Park over the summer, Allardyce has overhauled the club’s scouting network and admits it may take time before he has the kind of global knowledge he is seeking. However, investment in January remains very much a priority and it is understood the club had scouts present to watch Chelsea defender Tal Ben Haim and Zenit St Petersburg playmaker Andrei Arshavin in Israel’s 2-1 win over Russia at the weekend. Allardyce will seek talks with Ashley and chairman Chris Mort and he admits that he is looking to bring some talented young players to Tyneside. "I will have discussions with Mike and Chris when the time is right,” said Allardyce. "We will sit down and plan for what might or might not happen regarding January and move it forward from there. “Those discussions are not needed yet. What we need is the information on the players who would make Newcastle United better at first-team level, and then below that at an age where we don't have any development players. “The club has very few development players between the ages of 20 and 17. "That all comes with time and the right structure and having the right amount of knowledge to get those players. "The scouts are out watching 24/7, 365 days a year. All we're doing now is building up knowledge and a database of players that has had to start from its infancy. "It will take a good few years to come up to speed to live with the big boys in The Premier League, but we have started the process."

Because we have been a shambles in the past? and his time spent at other clubs was looking at players that would come and who he could afford and with limited resources?? Do think Wenger contacts/knowledge appeared over night? We have had only had Krul and Zoggy come though in recent years from scouting for young talent. Ketsbaia 0
Didn't we have only one scout under Roeder? Pretty pathetic by anyones standards, so it's very nice to see Sam looking to the future. There's no way we're going to be able to compete with the likes of Wenger when it comes to young talent just yet. He's got a reputation of taking young players and turning them into world beaters. Just look what he's done with Fabregas.

He's not saying that, he's making the point that to put together a scouting network like the Arsenal's and Man Utd's is going to take time, these clubs employ scouts in different countries who build up information on several players, so if Allardyce wants a right winger who's quick then he will have information on several players from different leagues and narrow is search down from there. Compare that to under Roeder where he had to scout the likes of Kuyt himself and it's easy to see why we've been such a mess in the past, that wasn't Roeder's fault as he took over a club in this mess, Shepherd is to blame as when he sacked Robson he got rid of his backroom staff and the whole set up he had spent time putting together which left us with nothing. Dr Gloom 22524
did we really only have one scout under roeder? that defies belief if true. i didn't think even freddie shepherd could be so inept as to not to have some kind of scouting network in place. There was some comment (from Roeder himself perhaps) at the time about how there was only one scout or something very similar. Shocking state of affairs. Baggio 0
Scouting network needs rebuilding Mar 25 2007 By The Sunday Sun Glenn Roeder last night vowed to rebuild a Newcastle scouting network he claims is all but non-existent . . . In order to identify transfer targets worthy of his quest for success at St James's Park. While Roeder describes his summer player search as his biggest challenge as United boss, his first - and biggest - signing of the summer may perform off the pitch. "We haven't got the recruitment personnel - ie the scouting network - we need, and we're working on that," Roeder revealed. "We've got one full-time scout. Frank Arnesen, at Academy level at Chelsea, has got more than 20 full-time scouts all around the world looking for young talent under 21. "The chairman is trying to help me and we've highlighted someone we want to employ. "We are trying to persuade him to leave his current club to come to Newcastle, and he would help me greatly. "We would be employing his address book. He has got contacts, and we haven't."

Well it seemed to be more with Souness (who seemed to base transfers on something other than talent ) and Roeder got stuck with it. Maybe even under Robson too, although more because he likely has the kind of unofficial network that might make some other clubs weep.
sammynb 3640
No doubt it was as much to do with Dougie, jnr Shepherd, Willie Mackay and what was the name of the agents that had offices in SJP?
