So your main qualm is with the passing of time and the fact more and more people have had no direct relation/contact who was alive during war time? Even though those people can do lots to find out about WW1 with the wealth of information available and on the national curriculum.

 

Part of it yes, but as much as well it's to remember to remember correctly. Few now really see the run up to WW2 as it was seen at the time socially and politically, as we see it in a post WW2 way (after the war drums of that and the creation of perhaps the defining bogey man of modern times and another for much of the next 50 years).

 

Also, you're saying if those of us in that position can't do any more than read or watch documentries to remind ourselves, we should just stop trying because we're insulting the people that were there? So basically in one more generation we should just forget about it because we're insulting them even trying to remember given that they're no longer here to remind us in person.

 

I don't know what would be worse tbh, if you're on a WUM or if you believe this.

 

Again their you go with saying what you WANT me to say, no I'm not.

 

But equally as those last old guys go, so do the people that knew the genuine horror of it - my point is more that we should remember that horror for exactly what it was (and do our very best to keep that memory alive - in ways like the Holocaust is keep alive), not just as names on a stone once a year.

I can see what FOP's getting at to be fair although we should keep the insults and swearing out of this particular thread.

 

Yup, nought to do with me though.

 

There is very little focus in general on old people in this country and the sacrifice of those ordinary people who gave up so much is now relegated to a few minutes once a year.

 

As time passes we forget, especially when it's no longer represented by people that are still living and breathing.

 

You can see how WW1 is going, probably WW2 will go the same way (it is in some ways as I've mentioned, already still well within living memory).

 

As those things are forgotten so old mistakes creep back. I'm fairly sure that the people remembered would want as much as their own and their comrades sacrifices to be remember, to also remember exactly why not do it again. If everyone was exposed to the direct memories of WW1 would we ever have war again? A lot less at least I'd guess.

 

And it's not just old guys that get a bit forgotten, even causalities from current engagements are being rather neglected, especially when they come back badly wounded.

Hardly. That's him having a not unexpected and fairly tiresome go at ME not what I'm saying. Personal dislike is irrelevant to what I'm saying (it's just trying to start a different argument).

I'm glad its not just me then Snakey! Maybe it's my imagination but as I'm not on here all the time when I open a thread most seem to end up in just personal petty arguments. Its a shame as I love this forum very much.

It does happen a lot, Bev. It makes me cringe at times and I find it sad how people have to resort to the slanging.
