peasepud 59
We've been debating this for a few days now and cant come up with anyone so Im passing it over, since Monroe have there been any genuine full whack sex symbol to come anywhere near her? I dont mean personal opinion like but actual global face of everything, got the lot kind of girl. I dont think there has which then begs the question, of whether it was Marilyns death that caused her to be so big. Anyone?
Lazarus 0
Maybe Madonna? But shes not famous for solely being sexy.
Jimbo 175
The only ones that can come anywhere near Monroe are possibly Raquel Welch, Brigitte Bardot, and Pamela Anderson.
Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
Madonna circa the 1980's was the first one to come to mind. Never really my cup of tea though. I'd also add Jane Fonda to Jimbo's list.

MattM4 0
There are just too many girls coming from all sorts of media outlets for one to be as unanimous as in the past. Just something for all tastes now
Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
Wasn't Marilyn a size 16 or something? Modelling agency would kick her out the door these days.

spongebob toonpants 4183
I think the reason Marylin Monroe is out on her own is he dying in dodgy circumstances while still at the top, she never had to get old, big advantage in the sex symbol stakes. Jane Fonda is close but she was more of an icon than a sex symbol. The whole Hanoi Jane thing, mind you for men of my generation Barbarella was something of a landmark man alive! She then practically invented the whole exercise video thing, which in the days before internet porn inspired a whole new generation,. But she is now seventy and married to Ted Turner, not really got it going on. She should have had a heart attack making an exercise video and she could have been wank material for eternity. Again with Madonna is is hard for you young'uns to realise how hugely sexualy outragous she was considered at the start. Before Madonna you had none of this stomach business with women, she has probably influenced female fashion more than any other person in the 20th century. Not so much since the 21st century, you cant be married to Guy Ritchie and be a sex symbol. I reckon there is only one other candidate, she even has the conspiracy theory death thing going on. Princess Diana - come on down!

sammynb 3640
If you think about it the reasons behind the death of the sex symbol icon, like most things since the 1950s and early 60s it's the result of technology and the growth of the media. Marilyn and her ilk weren't subjected to the scrutiny that current female actors are, they never appeared on the small screen and were never found out for being nothing more than director's puppets because there was no cross media the way it is now. Would Marilyn have half the appeal if she was sitting next to Oprah being quizzed about her charity work in Africa? No because she would lose all the sex appeal, the big screen starlet icon because the world would see more of her than the occasional newspaper pic and the inuendos about only presidents and film company executives being good enough to fuck her. Aye, the times and that she died (in staying "young" forever, adding conspiracy allure and perpetuation the whole myth). In fact as far as I'm aware she wasn't really the biggest "sex symbol" at the time, that's more something that has been built up after the fact. In fact as far as I'm aware she wasn't really the biggest "sex symbol" at the time, that's more something that has been built up after the fact. Who was bigger back then? It depends on which bit of her career and where exactly you're measuring it from (as usual the US dominated media paints a historical picture that tends to crush all that went before it - did WW2 even start before Pearl Harbour? I think not). She was a "big star", but really absolutely head and shoulders above all else in the manner she's portrayed now? No, not at all. She just didn't grow old (died in mid 30's) and fat (and fail at the box office as her charms slowly deserted her) and perhaps most importantly left the world wanting more. It's something that's done wonders from many careers (albiet the people themselves ever enjoy it), from Jesus, to Elvis, to Morrison, to Cobain. With the possible exception of Elvis a good death still more or less in your prime does wonders for the longevity of your career. She also perhaps was lucky in being at the end of the Hollywood in house star era, building and promoting stars never really worked in Hollywood after the mid-60's in quite the manner it had in the 50's, 40's and 30's. sammynb 3640
Marlene Dietrich, Kim Novak, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall even Grace Kelly to answer your question Alex. As for Fop's comment about an early death helping one's career, James Dean is a prime example of a bad actor saved by death.
