Besty 4
Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido has revealed wing-back Antonio Puerta had a heart attack in his side's game against Getafe. Puerta is in a "very serious" condition in intensive care after collapsing in his own box after 35 minutes of Sevilla's Primera Liga opener. The Spain international had walked off the pitch following the incident but then collapsed again in the changing rooms and was taken to the Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville. Del Nido says Puerta is stable but admitted the 22-year-old suffered a heart attack during Saturday's 4-1 win over Getafe. "He had a heart attack. He's in intensive care and is stable," Del Nido told Cadena Ser radio. "We were scared, very scared, for the life of the player." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11834_2686981,00.html
MattM4 0
Saw this earlier on... Drago was in there with the first aid, but that is pretty scary. Crazy how you can see him just walk off the pitch at first. Apparently he had a seizure at first...
Brock Manson 0
Was watching this match and seeing Puerta collapse with people running over was really scary to see. Especially if Drago hadn't been in so quickly he could've died. Glad to see him come round but it looked serious. Hope he makes a full recovery. Fop 1
I'm sure there's a specific name for the heart issue that tends to affect very fit people (i.e. the marathon/triathlon runners that just drop down dead in a races etc.). Wonder if it is that issue. 22 though.

Jimbo 175
What happened to cause this, is there anything untoward in his medical history? The Spanish correspondent ont Talksport said he had reportedly fainted on several occasions recently, but clearly they had either not done any cardiac tests or not detected anything. Lazarus 0
http://www.worldcuplatest.com/spains-anton...l-fol-4797.html http://www.soccerblog.com/2007/08/antonio_...inues_to_be.htm Clinical studies have shown that endurance athletes who suddenly collapse have structural defects of the right ventricle resulting in reduced ejection fractions (blood flow). There is a slim chance that Puerta maybe able to come back to the soccer field but he will have to wear a cardioverter fibrillator that can shock the heart back into beating again. So how worrisome is this condition exactly? However, Heidbuchel added that ventricular arrhythmias aren't common, and endurance athletes don't need to worry about them too much. "But they need to be vigilant and honest with themselves: If they have a family history of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), arrhythmias, sudden death or other heart complaints, or if they have experienced exercise-induced light-headedness, palpitations or fainting, then they should see their doctor for an evaluation," Heidbuchel said. http://www.soccerway.com/news/2007/August/...er-heart-attack According to Araceli Boraita Perez of the Spanish Society of Cardiologists and member of the cardiology unit of Spain's Higher Sports Council (CSD) between 74 and 94 percent of sporting sudden deaths are down to cardiovascular irregularities. Boraita told the Europa Press news agency such cases occurring in athletes aged under 30 were likely to involve people with congenital deficiencies in their coronary arteries. "In cases such as that of Puerta, who has symptoms and a part record of having fainting fits and nausea during other games one has to insist and conscientiously keep a look out as many times (these) can go unnoticed," added Boraita, while adding "there was nothing to suspect" that Puerta had been on the verge of cardiovascular trouble." In June 2003 28-year-old Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe died after collapsing with a heart attack during a Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia in Lyon. In January 2004 Benfica's Hungarian international Miklos Feher died after collapsing from a heart attack just before the end of a league game against Vitoria Guimaraes. He was 24. "La evolución clínica del paciente es desfavorable por la progresión de los signos de sufrimiento cerebral postanóxico, y por la disfunción multiorgánica causada por la parada cardiaca prolongada que motivó su ingreso", the clinical progress of the patient is unfavourable due to increased signs of suffering cerebral postanoxico, and due to the multi organ dysfunction caused by the prolonged cardiac arrest which was the reason for entering the hospital. Sounds like the poor guy is suffering brain damage then from the seizures as well as the direct effect/damage on his other organs.
