Players care for and train their puppy by petting it, walking it and buying it supplies to play with. As a puppy competes in obedience and agility trials, owners can win money to purchase other puppy breeds. The pups will vary in gender, coloration and personality. Players purchase one of several breeds available at the beginning, then start spending time with their pup. They throw flying discs and balls to improve the pup’s agility, bathe it when it gets dirty and use their own personal voice commands to train the dog to do tricks. If players train it well enough, they will excel in obedience and agility trials and disc competitions, which will earn money that they can use to buy other supplies and puppy breeds. When players earn enough cash, they can buy even more puppies to live with their original pup. Players can socialize their pups by walking them around the town, where they will meet neighborhood dogs, and maybe even find new toys. Trips to the park and gym offer valuable training time to prepare for agility trials and disc competitions. Over time, the pup's stamina will increase so players can explore farther and farther. Players also can interact wirelessly with their friends' Nintendogs – they can set their DS to bark whenever another puppy is within wireless range.

And it's getting reviews like it's the best game ever!

I got it for the err missus.

Its really good, the dog does react to the things you do and say. Its very realistic. I suppose in its most basic form it is just Tamagotchi but it really is so much more. Its really addictive and one of the best handheld games Ive played.

Dont knock it till you've tried it.

Well it's exploded in Japan, helped the DS outsell the PSP by utterly miles. Starting to become a big thing in America too.

My local games shop has it on import. Might get it, but then they've got Pac N Roll and Advance Wars DS as well so I'll have to make some choices.

Nintendo's doggy simulation becomes a phenomenon in America too, as it sells through a quarter of a million units in its first week...

With sales of a quarter of a million units in its first week of availability, Nintendogs is not only America's hottest-selling video game, but the best-selling new game franchise ever for a portable system.

Nintendo is having to deliver more shipments of the game, as retailers report the game has sold out in several locations across America. The three versions of Nintendogs and the DS unit itself consistently rank at the top of Amazon.com's best-selling list of all video game products.

"Nearly 15 percent of all DS owners bought Nintendogs in just a week, a virtually unprecedented adoption rate for any title on an established system," explained Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's cult figure and executive vice president of sales & marketing. He said the game was also helping sell DS hardware. "Coupled with a price drop to $129.99, retailers are reporting DS sales up between one and a half and three times previous levels, and last week DS comfortably outsold our portable competitors."

After becoming a cultural phenomenon in Japan earlier this year, it launched in the United States last month on August 22, and is set to hit European shores this October.
