i'm not a fan of smith at all

I think he has more of a football brain than Dyer and id definitely a better finisher, however as has been argued elsewhere I don't see this as "simply" a replacement situation. I'd look to Charlie to fulfill the Dyer role (though with more skill) and Smith to offer other qualities.

I very much disagree tbh. Imho Dyer has a quite a good football brain with a good positional sense that too often was ridiculed as "just running around". And looking at Smith's goal record I don't know where the bit about his alleged finishing skills is coming from.

Smith isn't a bad player but far too much a grafter for my liking. As I said one for the charvers who like their players being dumb, agressive and running around with flying into tackles. As a replacement for Dyer I'd hoped for someone with more football skills and a more creative type of player.

Trying not to get into a contest between the two but I fely Dyer's decision making in the box/ when through was very poor - his choice of shooting or squaring a simple ball particularly drove me mad.

I also think you've been blinded to some extent by his aggresive streak (which I like) and are underestimating his skill.

I'm no fan of cloggers - we coined the phrase "mcCreeryitis" years ago to mock fans who you describe - Smith is not like that imo.

Before anyone gets me wrong, it was overdue to get rid of Dyer. But he was more the type of player I like in midfield than Smith tbh. I am not denying that Smith has considerable skill, just that I think he is more suited to play as a striker or in fact as Ferguson tried to use him - a battling defensive midfielder in the Keane/Batty mood. As an attacking midfielder I think a player needs different skills to those Smith has. Especially flair and vision are two of them which I think Smith does not have.

I think Zog can fill Dyers boots and then some. He was feeling the effects of Roederitis last season but now he is looking a different player under BS

Good point. If Milner and the Zogmeister are developed and used properly the departure of Dyer will be no big deal (which it isn't anyway really, because as I said earlier in the thread he only turned up to a handful of games a season).

If it really means N'Zogbia getting his chance then I'm more than happy as I rate the lad quite a lot. If N'Zobia's squad status remains the same and cloggers like Smith getting put ahead of him then I won't bet too excited about the outcome tbh.

Yep! I think BS will get the best out of Both Milner and the Zog. I also like the look of Geremi in the middle

Just to put people straight, Smith spent half of his Leeds career playing on the right, not as an out and out striker.

he played a fair bit on the right under o'leary the season they had fowler and viduka but are you sure it was half the games he's played? i'm pretty sure he's played more games than not up front (his prefered position).

but anyway, that's not the point. the chances are that if we sign him he'll be playing in midfield because we have three better strikers already at the club. would you fancy smith as our new right winger?

I think BS might look at Smith on the right side of a 4-3-3 with Viduka in the middle and Martins or Luque on the left and Owen in his preferred position on the treatment table

lol. you're probably right.

dunno why i'm complaining. we need bodies asap.

£6m seems expensive and he's not a player i would have gone for personally but i hope i'm proven wrong and he does well for us.

I think with injury record of our strikers, Viduka,Owen and Shola a versitile player like Smith will prove to be a decent buy. £6m in todays market for an English player with Prem experience isnt OTT in my opinion. Wigan paid £5.5m for koumas and Fulham paid the same for Kamara

City complete Garrido deal

Four-year contract for defender

Manchester City have completed the signing of Spanish defender Javi Garrido.

Skysports.com broke the news of City's interest in Garrido on Wednesday and they have moved quickly to tie up his signature.

The 22-year-old penned a four-year after passing a medical at the club's Carrington training complex.

Garrido, who came through the youth ranks at Sociedad, becomes Sven Goran Eriksson's fifth signing of the summer.

(He's a left back)

City are gonna have a complete new team at this rate. Whats the chances of them struggling again?

City and West Ham, it's going to be interesting to see what position their spending buys them this season.

Can't say I'm thrilled (would prefer Gudjohnsen) but I do think he is a pretty good player as well as being someone who will not hide like some of our players have recently.

Decent enough addition to the squad though.

that's how i feel about him. he's a decent addition to the squad but for £6m, i think we should be looking at players that will be starting most games. if everyone's fit, smith should start on the bench.

If Gudjohnsen were available for the same price then he would've been a better choice imo.
