i'm not a fan of smith at all

I always was when he was Leeds. I have doubts as I would on any player who comes back from a really bad injury but this is balanced by the Man U factor - I think Ferguson generally improves players who sign for him.

I think he has more of a football brain than Dyer and id definitely a better finisher, however as has been argued elsewhere I don't see this as "simply" a replacement situation. I'd look to Charlie to fulfill the Dyer role (though with more skill) and Smith to offer other qualities.

I'm happy enough with this signing. A step in the right direction.

Hooray, a grafter for the charver boys...

Being a dirty C doesn't mean you can't be skilfull - see David Batty or Keane.

his goal record is almost as poor as dyer's even though he's played the majority of his career up front. plus he has no pace, he's got a dodgy temprement, he looks average in midfield and he won't start up front ahead of viduka, owen or martins.

apart from that he's great though.

There are situations where I can see him starting ahead of those three. Looks like Allardyce favours 4-3-3, and there'll need to be rotation.

i've no problem with 4-3-3 but can't see owen fitting in if that's the lineup we're using

Harsh :icon_lol:

I know you could say the same about Dyer but I think when he first played for Leeds he showed he can score goals. On pace its not the be all and end all especially if it has little end product - we have Martins and possibly Charlie to provide that and maybe someone else yet to come.

As is already apparent I don't think our set of strikers, though good on paper, are likely to be available every week. Martins' injury record isn't possibly as bad as the others but don't forget the African cup (presuming he changes hi mind on going).

I very much disagree tbh. Imho Dyer has a quite a good football brain with a good positional sense that too often was ridiculed as "just running around". And looking at Smith's goal record I don't know where the bit about his alleged finishing skills is coming from.

Smith isn't a bad player but far too much a grafter for my liking. As I said one for the charvers who like their players being dumb, agressive and running around with flying into tackles. As a replacement for Dyer I'd hoped for someone with more football skills and a more creative type of player.

Is it set in stone that he is the direct replacement for Dyer (who only put in about 5 or 6 decent performances a season anyway, the rest of the time being ineffectual, anonymous or injured) or is the transfer window open for another four weeks?

Trying not to get into a contest between the two but I fely Dyer's decision making in the box/ when through was very poor - his choice of shooting or squaring a simple ball particularly drove me mad.

I also think you've been blinded to some extent by his aggresive streak (which I like) and are underestimating his skill.

I'm no fan of cloggers - we coined the phrase "mcCreeryitis" years ago to mock fans who you describe - Smith is not like that imo.

agree. now dyer's gone, we should be looking at bringing someone with pace and skill that can play on the wings. suddenly our wide options are looking a bit shit with duff injured, nobby not getting any younger and n'zogbia looking crap for most of last season.

Well, I take it from Allardyce's comments yesterday that the replacement for Dyer is already lined up. Plus with other positions being priorities I can't see Sam signing another attacking midfielder/striker after going for Smith.

I think Zog can fill Dyers boots and then some. He was feeling the effects of Roederitis last season but now he is looking a different player under BS

Good point. If Milner and the Zogmeister are developed and used properly the departure of Dyer will be no big deal (which it isn't anyway really, because as I said earlier in the thread he only turned up to a handful of games a season).
