Ferry from Ullapool?" thats the best way - it takes bloody days to go "overland" but it's worth it IMHO compared to flying in train to Kyle or mallaig - boat/bus to Portree , bus to Ullapool, ferry to Tarbert or Stornoway it's bloody quiet mind - even quieter than some places in the S Pacific

That's what I'd go for. I know that everywhere (and I mean everywhere - even the pubs) close all day on a Sunday. I considered flying to Aberdeen and hiring a car but if I had the time I might consider driving all the way to Ullapool. Not sure when I'll get there though but it looks stunning from what I've seen. I'm sure it's lovely to look at the in the summer but it's a depressing place to work, that's for sure- the journey to Uig for the ferry is a bitch too! Renton 22493
I've been to Coll and Tiree. Too quiet really. Costs a fortune to get there too, which is the worst thing about the Scottish islands. Still, on a good day their beauty is unsurpassed.
Rob W 0
what was the old battle cry out there "No Taxation without transportation" and did you ever read the Conditions of Carriage for MacBraynes Ferries? I got a copy years ago after reading them in the bar of one of their boats................. You are not covered for (amongst other items) 1. the capt & crew plotting togther to defraud you or the owners 2. Piracy, the restraints of Princes etc 3. explosion of the boilers 4. shipwreck 5. boats may leave early or late or not at all, they may put back, not visit any of the places they said they would go, or in any order, or any places at all 6. "the plunging and vice of horses" and it goes on........................ Edited August 1, 2007 by Rob W

luckyluke 2
Spittal of GlensheeWellington NZ Jezza Dene St Annes Lytham I trust you're not referring to the gangster's paradise of a suburb in Nottingham. Being next to Lytham is the clue. I assumed that it was somewhere else, it's just odd for me to see St Anns in a 'places that are nice' thread! Guest alex
Calmac Ferries are pretty good in my experience. A bit dear though.
Fop 1
The centre of York is nice but the suburbs are shit. The older bits are nice, but yeah York in general is a combination of Noddy's-ville suburban hell and drug ridden shitholes. But it is credit to Yorks PR department that most people don't know this. Patterdale That's nice, but there are much nicer parts of the lakes. Edited August 1, 2007 by Fop

Renton 22493
Edit: in reply to Fop: Such as? I really like Patterdale. Good walking areas around Hellvellyn and rowing on Ullswater, and relatively unspoilt. Easy access from Newcastle too. Guest alex
I like it further west too, out by Buttermere and Crummock Water (and you get to go through Honister Pass). Grasmere is a lovely spot too and Coniston Water is great too. Beautiful part of the world. Bit crowded at times though.

The only place I haven't been to is Wasdale where there's some great climbing/walking apparently, but it must be at least an extra hour on the journey and there's only one hotel. I lived in the South Bank area of York for a couple of years. Never met such a bunch of rough, unfriendly, weirdo, no-hopers tbh. It was like going back in time too. Toonraider 0
Might as well, as there's one for not so nice places. Canterbury Bristol Bath Nottingham York Exeter Tunbridge Wells Durham Most of Exeter is a shithole except for around the Quay and canal. Newcastle Stratford upon avon Broadway and Cotswolds villages in general, Upper and Lower Slaughters for example. Loch Lommond Devon (of course)! inc Dartmoor, Dartmouth and Salcombe, extremely beautiful scenerey there. Bath. Snowdonia
