Owen's get out clause

Michael Owen has until Tuesday to activate the get-out clause in his contract, according to former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd.

The striker has a stipulation in his Magpies deal allowing him to leave, if an interested club offer £9.5million.

The clause was inserted into the contract signed by Owen upon his arrival from Real Madrid two years ago, but Shepherd says there is a deadline.

"Without it, I don't think we would have done the deal, but it is only valid until July 31," Shepherd told the Mail on Sunday.

"After that he would have to stay for another year, unless it was in the club's interest to let him go."

Owen has endured two injury-hit seasons at St James' Park and missed much of the last campaign with a knee problem suffered while playing for England at the World Cup.

Newcastle fought to receive compensation from the Football Association and Shepherd believes the battle was justified.

He added: "We needed a top-class replacement when Alan Shearer retired. Owen was the best around, so we set our stall out to get him.

"But we lost him before he kicked a ball for us last season.

"I took on the FA because I felt it was unfair that England could second a player and then not be responsible for paying his wages if he got injured."

So when he does want to leave next summer, we aren't obliged to sell him unless someone bids stupid money?

It will be down to Sam or the board if we sell him before next season. I cant see anyone bidding for him now as he`s injured(surprise there), If he starts banging them in and some of the top 4 get injuries you never know what could happen in Jan

No, the clause says that the get-out fee reduces by 25% of what we initially paid for him each summer.

Therefore, after the world cup he would have been available for £13.5 million (18m -25%) if anyone had wanted a player who was going to be rehabilitating for a year, this summer the fee is £9 million (18m -50%) and unfortunately next summer he'll be on the market for £4.5 million (18m -75%).

Is that not reliant on us not being in Europe?

He never said it didn't exist.

According to .com he did.

"The Liverpool Echo claimed the contract has a £12m buyout clause after one season, while Radio 5Live claimed that Newcastle will foot the bill for helicopter rides to and from Chester to training!

However, this one-year get-out clause has been categorically denied by Freddy Shepherd."
