Defender Heinze brings in lawyers

Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester United are confident of keeping Gabriel Heinze despite him calling in lawyers to try to clinch a move to Liverpool.

The Reds have met the £6.8m fee for the 29-year-old Argentine, but United do not want him to sell him to Liverpool.

"We're aware he's taking legal advice. We're confident of our position so I hope it's good advice," said Ferguson.

"He's due back in training on 6 August which gives him three weeks' rest after the Copa America. We expect him back."

United chief executive David Gill also said he was happy the club was in the right.

"He is a contracted player for two years and unless we receive an offer which is acceptable to us as a club, he will remain with us," he said.

Gill says that prior to Liverpool revealing their interest, he verbally informed Heinze's agent that United would not be prepared to sell him to any of their three major domestic rivals.

That conversation is thought to have been recorded, and if so, could feasibly, be used as evidence if the matter ended up in court.

Ferguson says Heinze's representatives have unsettled the defender.

"I think that if we could take away the agent's role in this I don't think an awful lot is wrong with Gabi's position at the club," said Ferguson.

"We've looked after Gabi very well. He had his cruciate knee operation and we looked after him.

"We let him do his rehabilitation in Spain, which he wanted and I think he's delighted at how we've treated him. We've conducted ourselves in a way that suited Gabi perfectly."

But Heinze, who signed from Paris St Germain in 2004, is thought to be keen to leave, and the large Spanish-speaking contingent at Anfield may be an attraction.

If he did end up at Liverpool, Heinze would become the first player to go directly from Old Trafford to Anfield since Phil Chisnall in 1964.

Riise on his way here? I hope so. Not the best defensive player in the world but he's a huge improvement over Babayaro.

Tbh I don't see how or why he's getting lawyers involved, he's contracted to Man United and they don't want to sell him, end of story. If Liverpool persist to try in obtaining him surely they're open to get done for tapping the player up?

Hes getting the lawyers involved because these particular lawyers are liverpool fc's lawyers.

Something that has wound fergie up no end apparantly.

He is a really good player. A different & higher quality player than Shorey or Baines, IMO.

We can't afford to be picky in anyways. People seem to keep forgetting that we're not a top four side who can attract who the fuck we want. Players are not gonna come flocking through the door because 13 years ago we were a good side challenging for the title. I'd be very happy if we signed an experience player of riise's caliber bearing in mind the lad's still only 26 & has played for over six years in the Premiership.

He is very good at hitting a ball very hard and quite good going forward. I wouldn't say he was a very good defender though.

We need pace going forward on the wing. An attacking full-back coupled with solid Centre-Halves could pay such exceptional dividends in giving us attacking options. I think Riise is an great player. He's a dead ball specialist, has a hell of a boot on him, and is also a comfortable left winger. I think he's the answer to a lot of our problems at left back. The problem we have, is a lack of attacking full-backs, Huntington is a Centre Half, Babyaro is never going to be adequate, Carr, on his good foot is shit, not to mention too slow for the Premiership, and on his bad foot is even worse, and N'Zogbia is a full out attacking player. Not a defender.

Our problem, defensively, is that our full-backs would roam forward with no plans to track back afterwards, which would leave people like Bramble, who is bad enough with support, running in and just sliding in aimlessely.

We need well-rounded full backs, not just players who fly forward.

Agree with this, Riise just isn't that good defensively.

i wouldn't. gives us more options than we currently have... i.e. dead ball wizard, good going forward, keeps possesion well.

funny thing about liverpool is neither of their fullbacks are that quick, they do however keep the ball really well. something our current first choice full backs don't do... except nobby.

what's funny is that Mad Alex is using the lawyers to get tevez but objetcs violently when soemone used them on him

the danger here of course is that the Judge just says the whole contract/transfer system is illegal

It doesn't apply in any other job......................

and yet he's been good enough to be first choice left back for one of the meanest defences in the premiership for a few years now.

he's about a million times better than anything we have in that position and he's decent at left wing too, not that that article suggests he's going anywhere.

The opinion of Liverpool fans on Riise seems to be that he's not good enough defensively to play LB and doesn't offer enough going forward to be considered a winger which leaves him really as a wing back which is something that Allardyce has made it clear he doesn't want.
