Barton's broken toe and Dyer's wish to move leave Allardyce short

Kieron Dyer appeared to play his final game for Newcastle at Carlisle on Saturday while Joey Barton played his last for six weeks having broken a metatarsal. Barton will undergo surgery today and is set to miss Newcastle's first three or four Premier League games. If it is four, then he will not be seen until the game at Derby County on September 17.

Given that Barton was handed the Newcastle captaincy on Saturday, and that he is Sam Allardyce's biggest signing at £5.8m, his loss is pivotal. However, it does not mean that Newcastle will persuade Dyer not to leave, with the club apparently preparing to receive an offer for him from West Ham, Tottenham or Manchester City this week. It is unlikely Newcastle would turn down £5m or more.

Over the past few days Dyer and Allardyce seem to have reached the same conclusion - that the player would be better off leaving the club he has been at since 1999. Having been played on the left wing in a prosaic 1-1 draw against the League One side, Dyer came off in the second half sporting a dejected look. When Allardyce was asked directly if that could have been Dyer's last appearance in black and white, he replied: "Kieron Dyer hasn't said anything to me. We've got no bid. If we do get a bid, then it might be his last game for Newcastle but we've got no bid.

What Allardyce did not say was that he was determined to hold on to the 28-year-old regardless. He said Newcastle were yet to receive an approach from West Ham but Alan Curbishley was quoted yesterday saying: "We have not made any contact with Newcastle and I understand Sam has said, 'There is no smoke without fire.' Perhaps he [Dyer] wants to leave. I would not rule out a move for him because I think he is a very exciting player."

Allardyce's first comment on Saturday was: "What I've learned is that we need more players" and he is now set to be another two down. Those remarks Allardyce has been making recently about Newcastle needing to inject some urgency into their recruitment have increased pertinence. To date he has acquired Barton, David Rozehnal and Geremi and has sold Scott Parker to West Ham. The net spend is around £2m.

"I'd hope we'd have got more faces in the last two weeks and we haven't got a single one," Allardyce repeated on Saturday. "As I've said, we need three or four. I've been telling you for weeks that I need three or four defenders in, so I'm going to be concerned, aren't I?"

Rozehnal and Geremi both made their Newcastle debuts against Carlisle. Rozehnal looked fast but was outjumped for the Carlisle goal. After Barton's news Geremi assumes greater importance as he can play in central midfield.

Emre Belozoglu can also play there but the Turk has an ankle injury. He joins Damien Duff in the treatment room and, while Allardyce was optimistic about Michael Owen, Shola Ameobi and James Milner, he was unable to use any of them at Brunton Park, where Nolberto Solano scored a 90th-minute equaliser.

Allardyce arrived at St James' Park admitting the club's track record on injuries had contributed to the managerial demise of his two predecessors, Graeme Souness and Glenn Roeder, and he is assembling a backroom team designed to keep serious injuries to a minimum.

"Our object is to make [the players] more aware of their bodies, more aware of what they need themselves to progress as footballers," said Allardyce. "Our policy is to prevent injuries and make players fitter physically and mentally, and that means they are more available to be selected for the team and give more value for money for the supporters and the club itself.

"That has probably been one of the biggest problems over the last two years here and arguably has cost the last two managers their jobs. The injury record has been one of the worst in the country."

Mark Viduka's international future remains uncertain after the 31-year-old Newcastle striker refused to commit to Australia following their Asian Cup defeat by Japan on Saturday.

Talks a lot of sense as usual, and it's good to see him expressing concern and urgency at the transfer situation. We really do need to step things up to give him a crack at getting the players to gel before the season kicks off in a few weeks.

Very open about the Dyer situation, not sure if that's 'games' though to get a bid in, or to entice other clubs.

I hope we don't sell him on the cheap though. Even if we sell him for a good price (£7m IMO), it's given Fat Sam more work to do, and he's struggling as it is(in the transfer market).

dyer should go and we can find someone a bit more consistent. i was a fan of dyers but he seems to be too shady. nzog has far better pace and is younger stick with him

It seems odd that Dyer would want to move now after getting fit and the change in the whole of NUFC at the moment. The words of BS suggest that maybe he & Dyer dont get on? If I was in Dyers position, I would have moved a couple of years ago rather than now.

Interesting point. Could Zog play as Dyer's replacement? Wasn't someone saying that his preferred position was in the middle of the field behind the strikers?

.Com's take on the Dyer situation:

Regardless of the Joey Barton injury blow, the Newcastle United career of Kieron Dyer looks to be drawing to a close, with three clubs now rumoured to be interested in signing him.

After some open-ended comments from West Ham boss Alan Curbishley over the weekend, the names of Spurs and Manchester City were added to the mix by Monday's papers.

When asked on Saturday if Dyer had played his last game for the club, Allardyce commented:

"Kieron Dyer hasn't said anything to me. We've got no bid. If we do get a bid, then it might be his last game for Newcastle but we've got no bid."

From our own perspective, we're happy to see him go. Quite simply, eight years of unrealised potential for whatever reason is just enough for us - if someone is prepared to pay his daft wages and give us a fee, then good luck to them.

The alternative prospect of two more years as he sees out his contract and becomes eligible for a testimonial is deeply unpalatable.

So much of what can be termed "the old guard" at SJP has been swept away by the massive off-field changes in recent months - for us, the departure of Dyer is a necessary part of the onfield revolution.

Hard to disagree with.

If Dire has been with us for 9 years wouldn't he be in line to benefit from a testimonial match when he's been with us for 10 years?

Surely that could be an incentive for him not to want to move as after all at 28 he's not going to be at another club for 10 years as a player and be eligible for a testimonial.

I don't think testimonials are the big deals they were years ago Noelie, not with the astronomical wages they pick up now. And beside how many would turn up for a Dyer testimonial?

Signing on fee at West Ham would be bigger than the gate money for his testimonial.

And i doubt he'd get a great reception from the ones who did go to his testimonial!

Evening all guys

before i start just want to say ive never claimed to be ITK, i know its a bit of an old cliche, but the only other bit of info i ever gave some of you may remember was the bale info - back in march or thereabouts, i knew someone within his family - and they told me he was signed up long before it was announced

this comes from the same source - now before you think bale just gossips with family about all the people coming in and out of spurs - its not how it is - but bale recently did have a chat with my mate - told him a few things. A lot, in credit to the ITKs, was what they were saying weeks ago - petrov, kaboul signed ect - so well done to them for clearly spot on info

anyway ** here it is **

basically said that lot of the guys are getting excited at training (this was before SA) said some of the lads were saying dyer was on his way - jenas defoe etc were particulary happy apparently. said it wasnt done but dyer was texting them saying it was a very good possibility. anyway this was last week, yesterday i text me mate again to find out any more info about this and he text me back tonight saying : last i herd from him he said it was very close to being complete - also commented on how the media have only just picked up on it
