Luque injury has lasted two years – Allardyce

ALBERT LUQUE has redoubled his efforts to impress Sam Allardyce by training on his days off – but the Newcastle United boss insists he isn’t ready yet to figure in his pre-season programme, (writes LEE RYDER).

Astonishingly, Allardyce has revealed that the former Deportivo la Coruna and Real Mallorca ace is still recovering from the hamstring injury he picked up almost two years ago when he limped off against Fulham on Michael Owen’s debut.

The Spaniard actually went up the pecking order yesterday after Owen was hurt in a shooting practice with an injured thigh which will now rule him out until the Juventus game in eight days’ time.

However, the Toon Army will have to wait a little longer to see Luque’s re-emergence despite extra efforts in training and the fact he scrapped his honeymoon after getting married a fortnight ago.

Allardyce told the Chronicle: “Albert is still quite some way off because he missed the Austria trip.

“We will now start seeing more of James Milner and Geremi but not Albert.

“In Albert’s case, deconditioning players throws their injury risk right up.

“We will monitor his fitness on a daily basis, and the medical team and sports science team come along and override you as a manager in terms of their expertise.

“That’s why you must bring them in and listen to their advice. Otherwise you could throw a player in and they could have a 45% chance of getting injured.

“So an injured player just goes backwards, which has been one of Albert’s problems over the last two years.

“That extends back to the first few days of his career here when he severely tore his hamstring.

“Even two years on he doesn’t feel like he’s at the level he was in Spain before he arrived.

“I have to be patient and get him first to the physical level and then the mental level to see if he can adjust to the premiership"

Just trying to make an excuse so when he plays him we dont get on his back. I still think Luque has something to offer us as you dont become a Spainish international overnight and you dont lose your class overnight either or once you join Newcastle. I think Sam can get something out of him and im a tad excited to see him prove the doubters wrong.

people keep saying he is shit, he is not shit just has not had enough chances. you need to give a player a run of games before you can decide whether he is good.

I think he's not particularly good with a crappy attitude.

But if Sam can works some magic then all the better.

Some truth in what you say there but I don't think he's done himself any favours either.

I hate to play the "do you go to the games" card, but I'd be interested to learn how many times you've seen him play. Because every time I've seen him play he's been shit and what's more he's never tried to look any better than shit.

As for the article, it's depressing stuff about his injury still not being sorted, but more good stuff from Allardyce in terms of making sure he's properly ready before throwing him into any games. As Fop says, let's hope he works some magic on him.

I think he's absolute class, with a shocking attitude (developed since he came to this country I might add)

If you went to work and your boss clearly didnt like you and took the piss you would have a crappy attitude too. Look at what Alberts doing now, Working days off, not going on honeymoon etc. He wants to be a success and under BS I reckon he will. Roeder made Di Canio look shit and he was class

Di Canio was injured for a lot of that season, so unless Roeder tackled Di Canio a bit too fiercely, I'd say it was the long-term injury that affected Di Canio more.

Di Canio came out and slated Roeder, He wasnt played when he was fit. Roeder puts his personal grievencies before the team. He should have learned his lesson. If luque is given a chance and proves not to be committed then I will be the first to admit I am wrong, But lets at least give him a fair go. FFS Bramble got 5 years and he was shit fot most of them.Duff has been poor too but hasnt taken anywhere near the stick dished out to Luque. Look how well Butt did last season when given a chance
