Newcastle United striker Michael Owen is confident of having a productive season for The Magpies.

Injury has plagued the England international's tenure at St James' Park, limiting him to just 13 Premier League starts in two years.

Owen is now fit and healthy after missing the whole of last season with the knee injury suffered at the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

The former Real Madrid and Liverpool ace is hoping his bad luck is firmly behind him and that fans can look forward to a season of goals.

"I don't want any bad injuries this year and if I can stay fit and healthy then I'm sure I'll score a few goals," he told Sky Sports News.

"I don't feel any different now. I feel like I did before.

"It's been a disappointing year, especially last year.

"I want to play well this year, I want to score goals and I want to make people happy.

"If I'm fit and healthy I think everyone knows I'll score goals.

"I'm feeling sharp and strong at the minute. I'm confident it'll be a good season.

"If the manager adds a defender or two to the squad then I think we'll be covered in every position and have a good team."

Meanwhile, Owen is remaining tight-lipped on his chances of captaining Newcastle this season.

New boss Sam Allardyce is yet to name Scott Parker's successor and Owen has been tipped to win the armband.

"I was asked about it the other day. I think there are plenty of good candidates in our squad already," he continued.

"It would be an honour to be asked, but we'll wait to see who the manager is going to ask.

"There are plenty of other candidates so we'll wait on that one."

Owen is closing in on a century of caps for England and the 27-year-old would love to achieve three figures for his country.

"It's everyone's dream to play for their country. To play 82 times, it's a great achievement.

"If I didn't have this injury or that injury I might have got to 100 caps already."

Thought he was going to get through an interview without a mention of England. How wrong I was.

Not through fault of his own though. Would've been asked.

Yeah, i realise that. I know it's not his intention to be asked every time but the journalists feel a need to mention it every time.
