I'm sure this isn't a new idea but it's something I've never understood; how do YouTube get away with publishing copyrighted material?

I'm pretty sure they can't use the same excuse as the peer-to-peer services that claim its up to the users, can they?

I know in the past YouTube have taken videos off at the request of copyright holders so they must admit to being, at least slightly, at fault. Is it possible to claim compensation from the site if they put up someone else's copyrighted material?

Not sure if they do get away with it in the long run, I know the Premier League recently forced them to remove many football clips and I recall MTV did something similar a while back.
