mmmmm, call me synic but the timing of this announcement AFTER Arsenal and United have shown their hands in the transfer market. I`m happy he is staying but would have prefered this statement earlier plus maybe an offer to resign without his buyout clause would show commitment to the cause.

Not sure how handing his notice in would help re-affirm his commitment, to be honest.

Ha! I missed out the - :blush::jesuswept:

But I would really love it if Carr would RESIGN ;)

Same with babayaro

He didn't start it? He never stopped the inevitable talk though.

"I believe that these can be good times to be at Newcastle, which is not exactly why I am pretending to be more than happy to be here. There has been plenty of speculation about my future, but no-one came in for me, I can assure the Newcastle fans that I'll start the speculation again in January with another period of silence....if my straw legs can hold out that long"

I don't expect him to have ANY commitment to the club.

I just think it's a bit of a contradiction of him to say "I don't believe in responding to rumours" in an article where he's responding to rumours.

Either keep it shut or say it when it actually means something. The time it's taken makes it an entirely hollow sentiment.

Fantastic news although I suspect the pessimists out there will say he's only come out and said it because they reckon he knows he won't get a move this summer.

You read my mind! :jesuswept:

No seriously, that's a good article and nice to read but you have to ask yourself why it wasn't done a darn site earlier. Obviously he couldn't comment on the training elements before training began but I'm sure he could have published something to nip the rumours in the bud before they gathered in earnest.

I think deep down we all know that if one of the "big four" would have come in for him, then he would have been off. Fortunately for us, he's had a chance to witness Sam's methods first hand and that could be the deciding factor in keeping him on Tyneside for another season at least.

Jesus fucking christ the bloke can't win! He's been berated for keeping his gob shut and in response to that, he's given his reasons for keeping quiet all this time and you're knocking him for that too!!!

So long as he's producing the goods for us on the pitch, I couldn't give a flying fuck about what he says to the press tbh. I think Gemmill's response to this thread is spot on!

Which is the case.

Probably true, but hopefully we'll get a good season out of him.

Unless he gets taken at Xmas of course.

He's the one who wants it both ways. I don't expect him to come out and say he's desperate to stay at Newcastle when there's the possibility of going to one of the top four, but I'm not going to pat his head and give him a biscuit for accepting we're the only one's currently willing to pay his wages. And I don't buy that he's now dedicated to the cause, if Liverpool come calling in January you wouldn't see him for dust.

Good stuff, he obviously won't change some people's minds though.

It's ok, once the season starts people will be back on the "I prefer Hitler to Shola Ameobi" stance instead.

I wish some people would understand the point that not everyone is like Alan Shearer with their thoughts on NUFC.

I don't believe there is any irrational hatred of Ameobi, just a very reasonalble opinion that he isn't good enough.

Who's patting him on the head? He's one of the most proven strikers in the history of the Premiership and for that reason alone, I am happy he is playing for us for at least the next half season. Personally I think it'll be longer but I can't see the point in looking past what he can possibly achieve for us in the coming months and instead have the attitude "he'll probably fuck off in January"

If he does, he does, worry about it then. If he doesn't give 100% over the next six months, he'll get a shit-load of stick. Personally I don't think that'll be the case.

As has been said elsewhere, he's not Alan Shearer and doesn't have the love for NUFC that Shearer does so why react as though he should??

I don't think it's a pessemestic view, just a factual one.

Hopefully he'll be part of a team that has us in the top 4 by January and he won't feel the need to tout himself about again.

That's also couple with the fact that he has never been good enough but we've still had to put up with him going arse over tit for the past few seasons.

That's just one person. Though, admittedly, he does harbour enough Shola hatred for at least half a dozen busy Toon messageboards.

MICHAEL Owen says that he is going into this season stronger than ever and has promised to get back on the goal trail for Newcastle United.

The 27-year-old striker is confident that his injury problems are now firmly behind him and says that as long as he is fit then goals will naturally follow.

Owen has found the net seven times in a black and white shirt since his switch from Real Madrid in 2005, but has been limited to just 13 starts in that time because of injury.

And the club record signing told Newcastle World TV: "It's never been a goal of mine of mine before to stay fit but I suppose after these last two years I want to play a full season.

"I don't consider myself injury prone, I have played a lot of games throughout my career for club and country and it's frustrating that my injuries have happened at Newcastle.

"I'm definitely going into this season as strong as I have been for a long, long time and I don't envisage any problems.

"If I'm fit everyone knows I will score goals, I have done that all my life."

Owen spent the first part of the summer away on international duty with England and holidaying with his family before returning to a new-look Magpies set-up with new owners, a new manager and new players all having arrived on Tyneside.

And the former Real Madrid ace admits there is a buzz around St.James' ahead of the new season.

"There is a lot of optimism around the club at the moment," he added.

"We have new owners, a new manager and new players. Usually if you just get one of the three there is a buzz, but we have a treble celebration.

"I'm sure the manager will buy more players before the start of the season and things are looking good at the moment."

And Owen added that it was nice to put straight recent media speculation linking him with a move away from the club.

"It's frustrating because I was away with England for three weeks, then I went to Dubai for a week and then to a couple of weddings.

"When I got back everyone was telling me I had been on the back pages, but I have never said one bad word about Newcastle United and I have always said that I've enjoyed it up here.

"I've got a house up here and the kids are in school and we're happy, and it's nice to put that straight."
