Barney 0
NEWCASTLE United's awful defender Peter Ramage today set off for the Magpies’ pre-season training camp in Austria admitting he is facing a fight to win a regular place in Sam Allardyce’s plans. The Geordie defender made 29 starts for Glenn Roeder’s side last season and has one year left to run on his current contract. Twenty-three-year-old Ramage missed a large chunk of last term due to a nagging hamstring injury sustained in the 2-2 draw with West Ham in January, but bounced back to play in the final two games of the campaign at home to Blackburn and then away to Watford. However, despite the fact that Ramage will have a head start on fellow Academy product Steven Taylor – who will miss the start of pre-season with a knock picked up at the Under-21 European Championships in Holland – the Northumberland-born player faces a stiff test early in the season with Czech defender David Rozehnal already on board from Paris St Germain and favourite to take a place alongside Taylor in the heart of defence. And although Titus Bramble, Craig Moore and Oguchi Onyewu are all long gone at St James’ Park, the prospect of Brazilian World Cup winner Edmilson arriving at some stage, with possible further defensive signings, means Ramage knows he is in for his toughest challenge yet in a black-and-white shirt – along with fringe players Paul Huntington and David Edgar. Ramage told the Chronicle: “I’ll come back recharged and ready to challenge for a starting spot. “I’m 24 in November, and I want to be knocking on the door week in, week out. “With a lot of hard work in pre-season, hopefully I can do that.” Allardyce knows only too well that improving the United back four is one of his main priorities at Newcastle, with coach Nigel Pearson also set to continue his role of defensive guru next term. And therefore the Toon boss is aware that competition for places can only improve the performances of Newcastle’s much-maligned defensive line which has been constantly criticised during their Premiership years. Yet it’s a scenario that Ramage is already revved up for. He added: “Competition keeps every one of us on our toes, and whoever comes in will have a fight to get that shirt.” http://icnewcastle.icnetwork.co.uk/newcast...-name_page.html

Barney 0
Lee Ryder of the Chronicle must have edited it himself. I hope he goes on to a Championship club and gets a proper career for himself. He seems a nice lad and has been shifted into several positions(where he was awful). He's 24 though and isn't of the quality to be in contention for a starting berth in a Premiership squad. Dr Gloom 22511
as long as he is never allowed to play at left back ever again i'll be happy. he'll do as a 4th or 5th choice centre half.

snakehips 0
Let's not dis the lad. We may think he's not good enough for us but let's not give him stick. I reckon he will struggle to get a game (unless the NUFC injury curse strikes again) but at least he wants to try and fight for a place. Good luck, Peter, you'll need it. Offshore Toon 0
I remember him playing very well as a centre back against West Ham when we beat them 2-0 away last season.
