Barca got Henry 'on cheap' - Bent

Tottenham's record £16.5m signing Darren Bent reckons Barcelona got Thierry Henry on the cheap when they signed him from Arsenal.

Bent's price tag raised eyebrows as Spurs paid £400,000 more for the striker than Barcelona paid for Henry.

Bent, 23, told BBC Five Live: "I think Barca got Thierry on the cheap as I'd have put him in the £30m bracket.

"But the price Charlton put on my head has nothing to do with me, I'm just grateful that Spurs took it."

Bent added that he expects to have to fight for his place at White Hart Lane, with competition from Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe.

He said: "I don't expect to walk into the team. Robbie and Jermain were both fantastic last season, and Dimitar had a great season.

"I'm aware of the challenge, but if me, Dimitar, Robbie and Jermain are all firing, it can only be good for Tottenham."

Bent reportedly turned down a bigger wage offer from West Ham to join Spurs, and said: "Money isn't everything, and you have to be a strong character.

"I know I want to play at the top level and to play in Europe, and for me that meant Tottenham.

"In the last two years they have finished fifth and hopefully this year we can break into the top four."

Smells of someone trying to justify his vastly over-inflated price tag if you ask me....

To be fair to the lad he was probably asked a question comparing his fee to Henry's.

Bent didn't set the fee and he could hardly answer by saying "Tottenham were completely ripped off".

No but they still were (which is no bad thing really).

The new Premiership money has sent spending way out of the realm of reason.

When you consider they've thrown the best part of £30m on Bale and Bent, I think Schpurs are nuts!

I reckon Jol will be out this coming season.

where have spurs suddenly got all this money to spend on one player

Because their board have built up the club well behind the scenes and turned them into a successful business.

I read somewhere that Bent will be paid for over 3 years, £5.5 million a season out of the extra £30 million a year clubs will soon be picking up.

I'd be worried about Spurs tbh. Looking like a good squad this season.

You'd be worried about Spurs if you were a Toon fan you mean? ;)
