Bombadil 0
Magpies impress target Ed by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle NEWCASTLE United have moved into pole position in their bid to bring Edmilson to St James’ Park after the Brazilian World Cup winner was impressed at the way Sam Allardyce flew to Barcelona to talk to him on Thursday night. My information is that after talking to the United delegation of Allardyce, Kenneth Shepherd, who was acting on behalf of his father Freddy as the chairman recovers from illness, and European scout Paul Montgomery, the 29-year-old defender indicated that he was willing to join Newcastle. And this even though Champions League holders AC Milan want to take him the Italy. But what has swayed Edmilson in United’s favour is that Big Sam flew to Spain to talk to him, his wife and his agent in a luxury Barcelona hotel. During these talks Edmilson told Allardyce that he expected to be in action again by October or November after a third operation on his knee. United had hoped to talk to Barca president Joan Laporte about what kind of deal they could strike, but he was busy tying up the signing of Lyon defender Eric Abidal. Now, bearing in mind the fact Barca have added Thierry Henry to their squad, Shepherd junior will talk to Laporte on Monday about Edmilson and striker Eidur Gudjohnsen. The Chronicle revealed in our later editions yesterday that Allardyce had asked England coach Steve Round to be his No 2, and I expect backroom men Mike Forde and Mark Taylor to arrive from Bolton Wanderers this week. But it is the prospect of seeing a third Brazilian in a black-and-white shirt, following in the footsteps of Mirandinha and Fumaca, which is quite naturally the talking point – and an exciting one at that – among the United supporters. United’s delegation left Barcelona yesterday knowing that they could not have done more to bring Edmilson to St James’ Park, and they discovered that he is a practising Christian who never touches alcohol. Perhaps more significantly, they also found out that his wages at the Nou Camp are around the £80,000-a-week mark, and that he will want big bucks to come to Newcastle. This is something that Allardyce will be hoping new owner Mike Ashley, chairman Shepherd and deputy chairman Chris Mort will get round, especially as Edmilson will not go straight into the United team. United also took the opportunity to talk to Barcelona doctor Ramon Cugat, and he explained to them that Edmilson had gone in for a pre-arranged operation on his knee at the end of the Spanish season. He had expected it to be just a minor operation to scrape away a bit of trouble, but they found more than they expected. However, Cugat assured United that Edmilson will make a complete recovery. Edmilson was in the Brazil team which lifted the World Cup in South Korea and Japan is 2002, and he told the United delegation that his big aim was to lead out his country in the competition in South Africa in two years. And Big Sam, who is looking for a United captain to replace Scott Parker, will duly have noted this. Allardyce will also step up his search for a left-back, and the lines will be hot this week between St James’ Park and Austria, where United will be sweating it out in a boot camp. Meanwhile, Olivier Bernard, who has been officially released by United, has had an operation on his hip in America, and the French defender is hoping to resume his career. It might be a long shot, but I would love to see Allardyce give Bernard another chance to prove his fitness and show that he could still hack it at St James’ Park. I'm glad they cleared that up. TheInspiration 1
At least the fact he "never touches alcohol" would mean he won't go on nights out drinking with Kieron and co.

Being teetotal is normally seen as a positive but didn't Didier runaway and hide because of the drinking culture in the team?

Being teetotal is normally seen as a positive but didn't Didier runaway and hide because of the drinking culture in the team? Went back to Paris and basically forced the club to sell him. Don't know what the reasons were. I'd take any 'excuse' for that sort of behaviour with a pinch of salt anyway.
