Big Sam bites back at Bolton

Sam Allardyce has issued a withered riposte in the direction of Phil Gartside, labelling the Bolton chairman 'sad and bitter'.

Newcastle chief Allardyce left Bolton just prior to the close of last season, after eight successful seasons, before taking over the reigns at St James' Park.

Allardyce's replacement at The Reebok was his former assistant Sammy Lee and while Gartside has been complimentary about his new manager, he has been less enthusiastic in his appraisal of his former charge.

In what should be an intriguing first game of next season Newcastle travel to Bolton, with an interesting sub-plot now likely to be the re-uniting of Allardyce and Gartside.

"Gartside reckoned I wouldn't have got the Bolton job if I was applying for it now and we would never have signed El-Hadji Diouf or Nicolas Anelka if it wasn't for Sammy Lee," Allardyce told the Sun.

"He also claimed Sammy did more of the coaching than me and was basically the better man.

"I began to wonder whether I'd done anything at Bolton. Did we dream Bolton came from nowhere to become a top Premier League team and qualify for Europe? Was it an illusion or something?

"Gartside just sounded sad and bitter. If I'd ever had any doubts about leaving Bolton, that justified to me that I was right to go."

Shut your fucking mouth Sam, leave your problems with Bolton in the past, we don't need any more dramas.

So the chairman basically says Big Sam wouldn't be good enough to get their job now, and says Lee is the reason for signing the players and did the coaching and Allardyce is supposed to say nothing to defend hismelf and his achievements at Bolton!!!

If somebody slates you like that then you're more than entitled to respond and defend yourself.

If he has a problem with what Gartside said then he should give him a call and talk to him himself, comments like this just add fuel to the fire. In general Allardyce is too keen to talk to the media, on this occasion I don't think anyone is taking Gartside's comments too seriously, everyone in football knows that Allardyce was the driving force behind Bolton's success.

Agree with that fwiw. Allardyce is his own biggest publicist but sometimes discretion is the better part. A good start to the season at Bolton is really important and given that fact Sam should be sensible enough to know those comments only distract from the task in hand. In board parlance, as ewerk rightly identifies, it was 'one for PM'.

I can see what you're saying, that he could have bollocked him over the phone. But i think he is very proud of what he's achieved in the game (perhaps more so than warranted, perhaps not) and so if somebody publically denegrates him and his work then he will respond publically back.

Also whilst i'm one of those people who doesn't want their manager or players mouthing of before games slagging off the other team, their manager or a particular player as it fires them up, i don't think Big Sam firing back at the chairman for denying him the credit for Bolton's success during the close season will exactly have the Bolton team fired up to beat us to a pulp!
