Allardyce has been busily attempting to recruit his backroom staff since replacing Glenn Roeder at St James' Park, and finally appears to have made a breakthrough. Round was England boss Steve McClaren's coach at Middlesbrough and later joined him in the international set-up shortly after Gareth Southgate's appointment at the Riverside Stadium. Round was a coach at Middlesbrough when Steve McClaren was in charge at the club and later joined him as part of the England team backroom staff. Round's playing career was ended by injury in 1993 and he began his coaching career with Derby before moving to Boro in 2001. Nigel Pearson was the previous number two at Newcastle. He worked Glenn Roeder and took charge of first-team affairs for the final game of the 2006-07 Premier League season but has now left the club. Round is on the England coaching staff with his former Boro boss Steve McClaren, and he is likely to continue with this role. Round, 36, had his playing career cut short by injury, but soon worked his way up the ranks in the coaching ladder with Derby, before joining McClaren at Boro, where the England boss regarded him as one of his main men at the Riverside. The pair also guided Boro to their finest hour by delivering the first trophy in 128 years to the Teessiders when they hoisted the Carling Cup in Cardiff in 2004. United are hoping Round will be able to join them next week in Austria for their seven-day training camp, with Big Sam already stating he wants the players to bond with the coaching staff. The appointment of Round coincides with the arrival of performance director Mike Forde and head of sports science Mark Taylor, who are also set to be on board. It also puts a question mark over the position of Nigel Pearson, although the ex-Carlisle boss is under no pressure to quit St James’ Park, along with last season’s reserve-team coach Lee Clark and Terry McDermott. The Magpies boss told nufc.co.uk: "We have been talking to Steve Round about coming in and working alongside Nigel Pearson as a first team coach, and those talks are ongoing."
