Scottish Mag 3
Tottenham are set to complete a deal to sign England striker Darren Bent from Charlton, BBC Sport understands. The 23-year-old turned down a move to West Ham last week after the Hammers had agreed a £17m fee with Championship side Charlton for his services. Bent will instead move to Spurs, even though their valuation of the player is some way short of the Addicks' after they had a £13m bid turned down. The two clubs are believed to have reached a compromise on Wednesday. Liverpool were also interested in Bent, but they have instead turned their attentions to Atletico Madrid's Spanish striker Fernando Torres. If Bent had decided to join West Ham he would have rejoined manager Alan Curbishley, who spent £2.75m to bring the striker to Charlton from Ipswich two years ago. Bent turned down a move to Upton Park in the hope of Spurs or Liverpool making a move for him. When Spurs capture their man, they may allow Jermain Defoe to leave White Hart Lane, with Manchester United and Aston Villa linked with the 24-year-old. midds 0
The 'article' doesn't specify a price but, reading between the lines, I'd imagine a compromise fee of about £15m. This is about 3 times more than his actual value and playing second fiddle to Keane and Berbatov won't appeal to him. He'll score 8 and demand another move next summer. With a bit of luck. midds 0
Believed to be in the region of £16.5 million according to Sky. That's ridiculous. Not you, Spurs. Personally, I'd baulk at £6.5m, let alone an extra £10m. When you look at some of the deals that are being done on the continent, a domestic transfer of £16m is pretty major news. Spurs have been well and truly ripped off for a squad player. Let's just hope they've blown their beans on Bent and not chosen to strengthen their entire squad.... Isegrim 10017
Bayern got Toni for 8m quid, Klose for 10m, they sold Makaay for a pittance. It's ridiculous, as long as you are English and don't break your legs when walking straight for more than 25 meters (or whatever fancy linear measure... Chaser 1321
I'd probably say that Bent was worth £8-10m as he's had 15 goals last season, 22 yr before and 19 goals before that, showing he's pretty consistent in a very average team. If he plays in a better squad, he could be a hell of a player and when you compare the prices for other strikers who have scored a similar tally, I think he'd be good value at that. £17m on the other hand is too high. I agree, £17m is stupid money when it's more than Henry went for, but Bent has shown he scores goals in the prem for a very average side and in a better team playing regularly you'd expect him to hit 20+ goals which is worth alot of money.
