Carr and Babayaro on the move

SAM Allardyce is preparing to axe both Stephen Carr and Celestine Babayaro as he continues to overhaul the Newcastle squad he inherited from Glenn Roeder.

As well as nearing an agreement with Marseille full-back Habib Beye, the Magpies manager is also closing in on Chelsea utility player Geremi as he looks to complete a major defensive rebuilding programme.

Given that Allardyce has already told Kieron Dyer that he is considering playing him at right-back next season, and that versatile Peruvian Nolberto Solano recently signed a one-year contract extension at St James' Park, Carr's future prospects appear bleak.

And sources in Portugal last night claimed that Sporting Lisbon had been in contact with Newcastle officials in an attempt to take Babayaro to the Jose Alvalade Stadium.

Sporting are understood to have had a proposed loan deal turned down, but the Portuguese club are ready to return to the table with an offer of a permanent deal that Allardyce could find hard to resist.

Neither Carr nor Babayaro impressed last season, and the former Bolton boss has already identified Newcastle's leaky defence as the area that needs the most urgent improvement.

Carr infuriated the Magpies' supporters with a series of below-par displays on both flanks, while the injury-prone Babayaro managed just 12 Premiership appearances as a succession of niggles and knocks kept him on the sidelines.

Carr would appear to be the more vulnerable of the pair, with Allardyce hoping to have signed at least one new right-back by the start of next week. The manager is understood to have held preliminary discussions with Geremi, a player who is currently being represented by Mark Curtis, an agent Allardyce worked closely with during his time at the Reebok Stadium.

The Cameroon international, who is also interesting Sunderland, is currently a free agent after Chelsea refused to extend his previous contract at Stamford Bridge.

While the versatile 28-year-old can play in both midfield and defence, he has spent the last two seasons playing almost exclusively at right-back.

Newcastle are not the only club to have made contact with Geremi's representatives - Portsmouth and West Ham have also been linked with the former Middlesbrough player - but Allardyce is hoping that a return to the North-East will appeal to a player who spent a successful season on loan at the Riverside Stadium in 2002-03.

The Newcastle boss should finally bring another transfer to a successful conclusion later today when David Rozehnal's move from Paris St Germain is confirmed. His £3m move could not be confirmed yesterday as Magpies officials were awaiting the necessary paperwork to complete the deal.

Allardyce seems to have sussed who is shit at the club already and I'm confident in his abilities to identify and get the right replacements. Positive stuff.

Tbf I reckon nearly every man, woman and child who knows anything about NUFC knows that they're shit, quite how Roeder and Souness didn't says a lot for their managerial qualities.

Its looking likely that Carr and Babayaro and still doubts remain over the likes of Owen, Martins, Dyer and N’Zogbia.

It is looking like we could be seeing at least 9 or 10 additions to the squad for next season by the looks of things as we already had a small squad.

getting rid of those two wasters will be the best thing sam has done so far.

thank christ he can see what we all can. i can't believe the two of them have managed to bleed the club for 40 grand a week in wages without putting in a half decent shift between them.

He's also doing it without spending alot of cash, which is one of the best parts about it. I haven't seen any of Beye or Rozehnal but i'd be massively suprised if they weren't better than Carr and Bramble.

to be fair, Stevie Wonder could have spotted who was shit at the club, it struck me that the pundits were all to ready to slate our back line last season, where normally they'd pass comment occassionally, they would rail against the defence week after week (Rightly so). The thing I like is that he's unafraid to dump them without "giving them a clean slate"

The shrewd busniess is impressing me, so far, the Parker sale has funded the purchases. I wouldn't be surprised if the sign on fees were covered in the extra £2m after the Barton transfer.

We're gonna have to see 9 or 10 additions never mind could be. As you say the squad was already paper thin if you take those two out we are left with;

Keepers: Given, Harper, Krul - This is a satisfactory list if you ask me.

Fullbacks: Nobby and Taylor - Neither of them fullbacks but I could see both of them being used at rightback on occasion.

Centrebacks: Taylor, Rozenhal, Huntington, Edgar, Rammage - Rammage really shouldn't be anything more than 5th choice with Huntington and Edgar going out on loan to get some experience. Need two more in for my money.

Wingers: Duff, N'Zogbia, Nobby, Milner & Dyer - Quantity wise we are covered here especially as Milner and Dyer can cover both flanks. Quality wise I'm not sure about any of them. Duff had an awfully first season here, N'Zogbia doesn't look like he wants to be here, Nobby is getting on, Milner despite being on of our best players last season still doesn't provide much and god knows where Dyer is best played.

Centre Midfield: Barton, Butt, Emre & Dyer - Four experienced players who all have quality but the latter two especially haven't been very good lately. Hopefully Emre will be allowed to play further forward and actually create something for us. We could do with some more cover tbh and I would like to see someone who can unlock a few defences for us.

Strikers: Owen, Martins, Viduka, Shola, Caroll - If we don't lose Owen or Martins then we have possibly our strongest ever looking four and hopefully Caroll can go out on loan to gain some experience. Dyer, Duff and probably Milner could all play there at a push too. The uncertainty surrounding Owen & Martins is a distraction we could do with out though, we don't want to get stung with someone coming in for either or both of them late on leaving us with no time for replacements.

A manager who can see what the fans see. Whod have thunk it!

A manager who isn't being dictated to by his inept chairman tbh

Magpie makeover

Quotes from Celestine Babayaro made on Tuesday during a visit back to his native Nigeria:

"In Chelsea, I went through four managers, who came with new players and I still held on to my position, so I don't see why I should jitter over the coming of a new manager to Newcastle, or the coming of new players in the team surplus to requirement.

"The recruiting of new players for Newcastle is good for us because that was our major problem last season, as we lacked enough quality players who would serve as replacement in the event of injury or fatigue and this resulted in our coach calling upon players from the youth team to play certain positions.

"I know what I am capable of doing, and the coach has not told me that I would be surplus to requirement, so I don't entertain any fear of losing out at Newcastle. If injury does not come my way in the new season, the Premiership will see a new Babayaro".
