Big Sam hopes to snap up Geremi

Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce is closing in on a deal to take Chelsea utility man Geremi to St James' Park.

It is understood the Magpies are hopeful of securing the 28-year-old Cameroon international on a Bosman free transfer as he approaches the end of his four-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Geremi, who spent a season on loan at Middlesbrough from Real Madrid earlier in his career, made 23 starts and five substitute appearances for the Blues last season.

However, with Paulo Ferreira and Lassana Diarra competing for the right-back spot and Jose Mourinho boasting an embarrassment of riches in midfield, his future chances look limited.

Boro have repeatedly been linked with their former player this summer, although the Teessiders have insisted they have not been in the market for him.

Ironically, the right-back spot is one in which they have cover, although midfielder Nolberto Solano was used as an emergency defender in that position last season when Stephen Carr was either injured or having to play on the left.

However, Geremi's versatility could prove invaluable as Allardyce re-shapes his squad.

The manager has also been pursuing an interest in Marseille captain Habib Beye after releasing Titus Bramble, Craig Moore, Oguchi Onyewu and Olivier Bernard within days of his arrival at St James'.

Geremi's arrival would see him follow the same path as Damien Duff, who left Chelsea for Newcastle in a £5million switch last summer.

Although he hasn't played a great deal recently I really rate him and he'd be an excellent Bosman. Can play right/centre-mid and right-back too.

good going forward and at set pieces but i think he's a little suspect defensively. boro fans used to say that he rarely turned up away from home iirc.

Didn't he have a reputation at the smogs for being a home type player who disappeared in alot of away game and wasn't one for the tougher games?

Still if he's free, or near to free then its helping build our squad up and at 28 (i assumed he was a fair bit older) he's the right age to add some experience and should be at his peak.

How many fuckin' smog fans actually went to away games in order to be able to form an opinion on Geremi 'going missing' ??????

How dare you doubt the validty of all the hardcore smog away fans, i'm sure both of them know what they're talking about!

Surprised he is just 28 tbh.

It's a bit strange that we now seem to have money available, but are exactly doing what Roeder should have done last season, looking for some cheap players to add depth to the squad.

True story:

Watching MOTD in the 70's - Norwich v Boro. The camera showed the Boro fans and one had a Union flag with 'Champions' written on it!!!!;)

Beye plays at Right-back and prefers to play there while Geremi plays there too, doesn't he?

Nobby

Beye

Geremi

Still, it pretty much says a big fuck off to Steven Carr

In my James Milner hating ways I would be over the moon at Beye and Geremi on the right

I think Geremi is a midfielder who's been played at right back by Chelsea. He played there for Boro anyway IIRC.

I think he likes to play central or right midfield but has filled in at RB for Chelsea like you say.

good player, handy from freekicks as well.

Better than Emre......

Never mind Geremi, i think Ron Jeremy would be better than Emre from freekicks!

With his 3rd limb ?
