Shorey flattered by interest

Nicky Shorey has admitted that talk of interest from West Ham and Newcastle is 'flattering', even if the left-back appears to be happy to stay at Reading.

Shorey has been linked with a move from The Madejski Stadium after a season in which he played a prominent role for his club in their first season in the top flight and earned his first international recognition for England.

Reading are currently in talks with Shorey's agent regarding a new deal and director of football Nicky Hammond recently stated that the club are confident both the defender and Leroy Lita will commit their futures to the club.

For his part, Shorey is clearly content with life in Berkshire, telling the Reading Evening Post: "I've been happy at Reading for a long time now but we'll just have to see what happens.

"I'm going into the talks wanting to sort out my future with the club because I've done well at Reading.

"I've gone through the divisions with them and my time here really couldn't have gone better. Reading will always be special to me no matter what happens.

"I'll always think of them as my club, and in my time here it has just been success after success and hopefully that will continue.

"I got my opportunity with England by playing at Reading and that's a credit to the club. It also shows that you can play for a so-called 'smaller' club and still get recognised for England."

However, after being linked with both West Ham and Newcastle, Shorey has conceded that interest from two such ambitious clubs is pleasing to hear.

"Interest from those clubs is definitely flattering," Shorey told the Reading Evening Post.

"I've always wanted to do as well as I can, and when you do well, speculation will always be there.

"To be honest, though, I can never say never. Football is one of those sports where people move around all the time, but you just can't know if rumours like that are true or not."

Shorey deal blow for Magpies

By ANDREW HAIGH

June 25, 2007

NICKY SHOREY is set for a bumper new deal at Reading as Newcastle prepare a £5million bid.

The England left-back has also been linked with a move to West Ham.

But Royals' boss Steve Coppell reckons Shorey's new big-money contract will be worth every penny.

Coppell said: “Nicky’s success has dictated a new contract. It was discussed even before England came up.

“He may have only played because Wayne Bridge and Ashley Cole were injured, but all the England scouts must have given him a good report.

“And he proved himself with his level of performance – I thought he looked comfortable against one of the best teams in the world.”

Stephen Hunt's future at Reading is unsure after Coppell revealed the Royals will not enter talks about a new deal.

Coppell added: “We can’t do 20 contracts at a time. We are doing it on a rotational basis.

“Some may feel hard done by while others will think they are ahead of the game.

“But in all my time as a manager I have never known one player offer to give money back when they are playing crap!”

That's a pretty naive point of view tbh. Of course we would, but that's not how footballers think.

It was really aimed at us paying people over top wages to players so they will come pay for us over other teams over the years. I understand money means a lot to some players I just would like them to wan't to do things for the club and not the money.

Id take Shorey and Lita in heartbeat. If Lita is going for £5mil ish we should snap him up and kick 1 of owen/martins out the door. If he has a good season hel be worth triple that and he always looked dangerous in the U21 championships

Isn't worth £5 million. Don't get me wrong I rate him, but he's a prick off the pitch. Would benefit from playing alongside Viduka though. He could have Hummer races with Dyer as well.

I can't see Shorey going anywhere, but you never know. Still think he'd be a great signing whatever the price.
