The club's entire women's section - senior teams, academy and centre of excellence - are to be scrapped. The decision is part of drastic cost-cutting measures being carried out following the club's relegation from the men's Premier League last season. Women's team manager Keith Boanas confirmed to BBC Sport: "All the staff involved in the women's set-up have had their employment terminated." An official club statement is to be made next week but on Friday, Charlton chief executive Peter Varney released a statement outlining a "significant level of cuts" at The Valley. Boanas was at the helm from the time Charlton took the hugely successful Croydon women's team under their wing in 2000. He said: "I'm devastated for the players and the many young girls who have had their dreams and aspirations shattered. I've been phoning round the players and some of them have been in tears." Like Croydon, who in the 1990s twice achieved the Premier League and FA Cup Double, Charlton have provided the toughest opposition to all-conquering Arsenal. Captain and England defender Casey Stoney, angry at the closure of the women's section, said: "I'm disgusted with the club - the men get relegated and we get punished. "The club's only trophies in recent years have been won by the women's team - and in the last four seasons we were the only side apart from Arsenal to win major honours. "Seven weeks ago we played in front of a record crowd at the FA Cup final - that's now our last match and I'm totally gutted for everyone involved on the women's side. "I just hope that what has happened to us doesn't reverberate around the women's game - otherwise it will be in serious trouble." There will be serious repercussions from Charlton's demise, including the reduction from 12 teams to an unwieldy 11 in next season's top flight. Peter Hough, chairman of the FA Women's Premier League, confirmed: "The League's AGM has been held and, once that has gone, no adjustments can be made. "It's a very sad day for women's football. The Fish 11090 Posted June 23, 2007 Share Posted June 23, 2007 I know we mock the womens game, but there's no way it'll ever improve if things like this happen. and if I'm honest I'd rather the womens game improved because it might make the sport as a whole improve. It'd make womens chances of getting coaching and managerials roles in the mesn game easier and that MIGHT bring with it fresh ideas and concepts to the game. oh and we all like to see them swap shirts at the end of the game etc etc etc Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It's a valid point Fish I also think that the men's and women's teams should be run as almost two seperate entities. This action by Charlton makes it abundantly clear that the share the same money pot and that's wrong IMO. I understand they're both teams from the same 'club' but why should one (ironically who is successful) suffer as a direct consequence of the failure to succeed by the other? As far as I'm aware they can't be run as seperate entities as it is the men's game which subsidises the women's teams. If Charlton, who had a very successful ladies team, aren't profitable then I can't see there being too many that are. Without the money from 'proper' football the women's game wouldn't exist. It was a nice idea but there was a massive conflict of interests. If Newcastle Utd had been succesful, would our monies be spent on the Rugby team to improve them to the point that they paid for themselves? then the Basketball? How could the Football team maintain competition with their peers when a slice of their pie was being eaten by egg chasers? You're right when you say the two clubs should be seperate entities, but at the moment womens football is not seen as a lucrative busines, despite Charlton's women actually finding greater glory than their male counterparts... so I just can't see any wealthy entrepreneur piling much needed cash into their league. Nobody in his right mind would come to the idea to devalue the success of female tennis players or athletics because they can't compete with men. Women football has made a huge progress in recent years. I've played with some better female footballers and now players from the German national team.
