Darren Bent

NEWCASTLE are shock candidates to snatch Darren Bent to ease a potential striker crisis at the club.

Until now Tottenham have been favourites to sign the Charlton marksman, with the two clubs haggling over the fee. Liverpool are also in the running, but their prime target is believed to be Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres.

Tottenham upped their bid from £12million to £14m earlier this week for Bent but the Addicks say they will nothing less than £17m.

In recent days it had looked as though the relegated club were about to relent in their impasse with Spurs over their valuation of Bent.

Toon boss Sam Allardyce has lingering concerns over get-out clauses in the contracts of both Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins.

Allardyce fears losing one or even both forwards before the end of the transfer window.

Bent turned a £75,000-a-week, five-year deal to go to West Ham earlier this month - after Upton Park chiefs had agreed a £17m fee - insisting he is driven by ambition and not money. Newcastle can match that ambition with Big Sam's sights set firmly on ending the long wait for silverware at St James' Park.

Manchester City could also enter the running for Bent. City are desperate for a string of big-name signings - and a striker in particular - as the Eastlands club were the lowest scorers in the Premiership last season.

I thought it was nailed on that he was heading to Spurs?

Don't think he's worth £16m, might be worth trying to get Defoe for have of that if he does end up at WHL.

Isn't Bent the better goalscorer? Isn't Defoe a little too smiliar to Owen and Martins?

Bent is undoubtedly a better goal scorer but £16m is silly money IMO. I'd take Defoe as a replacement for one of Owen/Martins so we could have one of them and Defoe to play the little man beside Shola or Viduka.

I'd sell Owen and Martins, and buy Bent and Defoe. Sorted B)

The signing fee for Bent might be outrageous in comparison to other players, his wages might be considerable less than what someone like Owen is earning. So spread over a couple of years, even such a transfer could make sense businesswise. Especially not knowing how long we can hang on to Owen...

That's a good point, according to the Daily Mail this morning Spurs are offering him £45k pw which is usually what we offer the cleaners at SJP.

I don't believe this story for one second. It is probably nothing more than clever journalism to try and 'encourage' Spurs to come up with the cash to sign Bent.

Regarding Defoe, I thought he was a canny player until I saw Lineker and Shearer on MOTD demonstrating his flaws as a striker - stay clear imo. Robbie Keane must be available if Spurs get another striker as he wont want to be pushed down the pecking order?

DARREN IS BENT ON SIGNING FOR JOL AT SPURS

By Neil Silver

DARREN BENT will have a medical at Tottenham tomorrow and sign a five-year deal after Spurs agreed to pay a club record £16million for the Charlton striker.

The England forward has opted for White Hart Lane after rejecting a move to West Ham for the same fee, plus £1m-rated Hayden Mullins. It means Bent has accepted a £45,000 a week package rather than the £75,000 which was on offer at Upton Park, as he chose to play for Spurs boss Martin Jol rather than his former manager Alan Curbishley, now in charge of the Hammers.

Spurs will make a down-payment of £13m with a possible further £3m in add-ons. It is a cash-only deal as Charlton boss Alan Pardew decided against taking any players as part of the package.

Liverpool were also keen on Bent but he wanted to stay in London.

Berbetov and Bent would be too similar. It'll be one of those to play alongside Keane.

Berbatov and Bent are very different players. I hope we don't go for Bent. If he is worth 17 mill, Martins is worth 25 mill....

As much as I hate to say it, a strikeforce of Berbatov, Keane and Bent (and Defoe if they don't sell him) must be one of the best in the league. Fucking Spurs, fuck off.

Good strikeforce, but Spurs are all too often a team in general who are mostly style with very little substance.

I don't agree, but I aint gonna argue it.

However, you say it will be either Berbatov (the new golden boy of Premiership football in the media's eyes) or £16m Bent alongside Keane ???? I can't, for one second, believe Jol would be thinking along those lines - not in a million years.
