I've got my first interview for a real life job next week, what advice would you give me?

I'm meeting with the head of HR, the guy I'll be working under and the person who is currently in the position I'm going for. I've been told that the interview will be about 45 minutes long - is that normal sort of length? It sounds quite long...

How should I sell myself without coming across like a complete tosser? What should/shouldn't I do/say? What are good questions to ask?

I have a grey suit. What colour shirts go well with this?

Bright red, always works or orange, yes go with an orange shirt with green tie and matching socks, very important to match your socks with your tie.

What sort of job are you interviewing for?

My advice is firstly to do some research on the company. Nothing more than scanning their website if they have one - know what it is they do, if they've got some brags like "market leader" or whatever, know why they're market leader. Find out their mission statement.

But don't go in and blurt all that shite out like that tit did on the Apprentice (he looked like fucking Rainman "course you're the market leader in this area.....WAPNER! WAPNER!"). If they ask any questions about what you think of the company/what they do then you'll have something to come back with. The worst thing you can do is not know.

That's about all I would do in terms of advance preparation.

As far as the interview itself goes, more than anything else, employers are looking for people who will fit into a department and fit into a team, so if you can come across as someone with a bit of craic who can handle themselves confidently and get on with people, you'll be well on your way to getting the job. Couple that with the fact that you know a bit about what they do and you should be fine. Don't be cocky or brash and don't say anything daft (recently I asked a woman in interview how she would cope with difficult people and she said "sometimes the best thing to do is to just burst into tears" Righto. B) ), but be confident and likeable.

Also, have a couple of questions prepared to ask at the end. "What is the office culture like?" is one I always ask, and then just allow them to talk shit while I glaze over.

I've an interview next week too, need to get this one.

Only had one proper sort of interview before, what sort of job is it your going for? If it's a graduate level then a lot of interviews tend to be competency based i.e. giving examples of times when you've shown certain types of skills such as leadership, teamwork, using your intitiative, interacting with customers in the past, decision making, how you deal with disagreements etc.

Make sure you know what you wrote on your application form off by heart as they'll question you on certain aspects of it. Also research the job and the company, try and get a copy of their annual report if possible and pick out a few facts from it and try and ask them about any plans they've outlined for the future.

Most of all be friendly and appear really enthusiastic for the job.

What is 'office culture'?

I've applied to be a web journalist at STV. It's only a six month position but there's the hope that it can lead on to something else and if not I'll at least have some experience and a decent employer on my CV.

Don't cry - got it!

Ask that first. Then ask what it's like. B)

It's basically a clever way of asking "Am I gonna have to work fucking silly hours to get on at this place?" They'll always touch on hours when you ask that question, which is always worth knowing. They'll tell you if it's hierarchical, whether it's a young office, what the atmosphere around the place is like, etc. etc.

Don't ask them for fashion advice, either. B)

Light blue shirt and a tie with some darker blue in it, I'd say.

As for the actual interview stuff, god knows - I've only had two real interviews in my life. One was a shambles and I didn't particularly want the job anyway, the other was for my first company in Mainz and they were desperate for anyone vaguely competent.

Write out with felt tip: "Grey is this years black" and tape it to the lapelle of your grey suit.

On no account wear socks....It's passe now and just looks silly.

Best to sit at his feet on the floor and look up with puppy eyes..

Job in bag. FACT.

Get a stiffy, put a rubber band around the base then let it go flaccid, then strap it to your leg. Slip into your tightest Farrah's and pray it's a woman or a gay man doing the interview.

Can't go wrong with this tbh

Black shirt with a white tie. Have a hat with a white band around it as well. Oh, and spats. And a silver-topped cane.

Sorry. I'm not much help. Just be yourself. Show enthusiasm and interest. Try to talk English. Hobbies.

absolutely say something inappropriate about his children

B) Aye and if he's got a picture of his wife on his desk, nod in the direction of it and go "She'd get it."

Or nod towards the picture of her and say 'she looks familiar' whilst putting your tongue into the side of your mouth and winking.

Jobs yours tbh

absolutely say something inappropriate about his children

...or smile inanely as you produce slyly taken pics of his children with a telephoto lens..

Shake hands then and there in the full knowledge the position is yours. B)
