Barton takes No. 7 shirt

Albert Luque has lost his No 7 shirt to new boy Joey Barton at Newcastle United, (writes Alan Oliver).

However, the Spanish misfit could yet save his career at St James' Park - thanks to the Sam Allardyce approach.

Barton is keen to wear the United No 7 shirt worn with such distinction by Toon heroes Kevin Keegan and Robert Lee in recent seasons.

Allardyce has agreed to this request, but he insists he has not given up on Luque, who has only made six Premiership starts in his two seasons with United and scored that one League goal - at Sunderland.

Luque still has two years left on his contract at £40,000-a-week, but has turned down chances to move away from Tyneside - and he is still a United player.

Big Sam is clearly thinking of Luque - and some other United misfits - when he says: "I feel far too many players have got lost at this football club.

"It is my responsibility to make sure this does not happen to any current member of the staff or any new player I might bring in.

"One of the reasons I was successful at Bolton Wanderers was transforming a foreign player out of whatever country he had come from into a Premiership player.

"That's because we found out what problems he had as early as we possibly could.

"I don't want to be too critical of what has happened here in the past but in my opinion there has not been enough focus on what is happening in a player's life away from the training ground and the club.

"Has he got the right lifestyle? Is he living in the right place for him and his family?

"In fact it's not just the player but his wife and family.

"But once this is sorted out you get the best out of player and this is something I have to try and work out with Albert Luque.

"He might be too far gone. Who knows? But we might still be able to resurrect his career here. We will see."

Thought the loan deal was done and dusted?

Mental that the club spends well over £10m on a player (if you factor in wages) then doesn't put itself out to make sure everything possible is done to help them settle here.

By all means give Luque another chance, I don't have a problem with it at all.

I'd still first try to flog him, but if we find no one who is taking him from us, there will be no other choice. I don't think Luque would do to badly in a 4-3-3 Allardyce likes, if only he can get him to be a bit arsed on the pitch.

I've commented before on the allegded treatment of new, foriegn players by the club so i'll not go on another rant but it's nice to see Big Sam not just ignoring the players who have fallen out of favour with the previous regime. I'm still not convinced Luque will cut it in the Premiership but in La Liga he was class. The fact he's going to try and sort Luque out gives me hope that he's going to give Zoggy another much deserved chance.

The only way I feel we could get rid of him is for free, which is pointless.

Spot on there Sima. Might as well give him a go. And much as Luque hasn't helped himself Roeder treated him badly imo. Especially when he put all the pressure on Luque before Palermo away, only for him to score the winner and still not get another start. Bad crack imo.

Well, it's depending on the wages and what Sam's team plans are. If he is on that kind of wages that are rumoured (85k), I'd even consider giving him away on a free or a very small sum. I think it's very unlikely that Luque is becoming a success here. And as a squad player he can get easily replaced by someone who only demands a fraction of his wages. Some (naive) calculation, but freeing up 40k in wages would be like gaining 2m from the transfer (with some unhappy player out of the dressing room).

Spanish football expert on TALKsport the other day (British fellow whose name I can't recall) was astonished that Lucque didn't make it here. The expert said that if there was one player who he thought would adapt it would have been wor Bert.

Was it Souness' mate Michael Robinson? No surprise there...

No, I wasn't Robinson. Some reporter/journo. Maybe my use of the word 'expert' was mis-guided; especially if the journo was of the same quality of Anal Orifice.

Might have been Hunter(not the one off Gladiators).

He's a Spanish correspondent for SSN and a fair few radio stations.

It must have been, I remember Graham Hunter's comments on Luque before we signed him, he was drooling over the prospects of seeing Luque in the Premiership.

Unfortunately that was the poor level the running of this club had degenerated to.... B)

Once again Allardyce saying all the right things. Sensible approach, trying to get an expensive asset settled as quickly and comfortably as possible.

I've heard in the past that we have basically given foreign players the keys to a rented house and left them on the doorstep. Hardly surprising if they don't feel at their peak after that.

Agree with that. Luque hasn't done much himself but Roeder treat him like shit basically, especially after the Palermo match.

And as people have said such is/was the piss poor running of this club from top to bottom that its no wonder foreign players often completely bomb here when nothing is doen whatsoever to integrate them and help them out in a totally new situation in their life.

Probably too far gone with Luque I reckon. His own attitude on the pitch wouldn't suggest a massive effort from him either to turn around his fortunes.

I've been dying to see the lad be as good as people claim he is, but every time I see him play he either looks shit or dissinterested.

I never saw the Palermo game, how did he play that night?

It was the fact Roeder had made a big thing about it being Luque's chance, that he should show what he can do and show he deserves a chance. Luque played well, worked pretty hard i think and scored the only goal of the game. So Roeder naturally dropped him from the team completely when the lad might just have had a tiny bit of confidence and somethign to possibly build on.
