Knowing our lot we will have agreed to the starting 11 choice and he'll end up our new LB.

Plus once we resign Bellamy, a christmas party with the hunch back of notre dame, barton and smith should be a hoot (for the national tabloids at least.)

I've defended Shola to the hilt becuase of the shit he gets, but on par or better than Alan Smith? I don't see it myself.

Same with me.

Calm doon with Carroll man. Remember Chopra? He's barely played for the first team yet.

Carroll's a different player and a different stature to Chopra. He offers something different and potentially, IMO, looks a better prospect.

My brother's pal is a physio for the academy and that's what I've been told. Tbf, from what I've seen he has every chance of fulfilling his potential.

He's got a physical presence, aye. All I'm saying is it's far too early to judge him.

I agree. I'm not saying he's gonna be the next Pele, I'm just saying potentially from what I've seen and heard he looks like he could make an impact and hopefully show a bit of that this season.

As far as Smith goes I just don't rate him. He's always looked a composed player and has always got stuck in, but he's never quite cut it for me, like.

And Shola has?

Aye, but shola's playing for us, Alex. So why bring in another player who hasn't quite cut it? Even if Shola leaves I'd still like to see a better player replace him, IMO.

Smith is much better than Shola man. Getting someone like Smith in as 4th choice striker is a good move for the club and Carroll will probably go on loan next season anyway. Obviously if Martins, for example, were to leave, things would change but I'd then expect Allardyce to go for someone like Anelka.

Hmmmm, not really 'debate of the year' to get into, so think I'll say no more there.

He could go out on loan, and that would be a good move, but for 4th choice I'd prefer to see one of the acedmy lads, imo. I guess the bottom line is I just don't rate the lad, smithy that is.

If you want to compete 4th choice striker isn't the role for some unproven academy kid imo. Fair enough re: your views on Smith though and he has gone backwards since moving to Man Utd.

Well apparantly Sam has said he could guarantee him the football he isnt getting at Man Utd. Perhaps Sam is thinking Owen / MArtins / Vikuka at home and Owen / Smith / Viduka away. Or, taking into account injuries and internationals, a mix of Owen/Smith/Viduka/Martins for our first choice rotation. Not like we are in Europe though. Of course, this doesnt leave much room for Shola and Carroll is still too young to be worrying about grabbing a first team role regularly.

Id also rate Smith above Shola sadly.

Smith in a role not unlike the way Gudjohnsen played in his last season at Chelsea?

Playing alongside Barton as an attacking midfielder? Gives us a little more strength in the air and with his eye for a pass could help link the play from the back four to the strikers

I guess injuries will always occur, hopefully not like last season, but it's a shame that we use the yougens only when we're to the bare bone rather then give them more of a chance to get more experience at this level.

I suppose it just depends what the kids are like mate. Much as we take the piss out of Roeder, Souness or whoever they know more about footie than most and they see them a lot. I'm pretty sure they would promore the kids if they thought they were up to it (especially given the injury crisis we've had over the last two years). I do have a bit of convuluted source of inside info from time to time though and I did hear that Carroll looks a canny player but he has been pretty overwhelmed (literally knees knocking) when he has been called into the squad and brought off the bench. I'm sure he'll get over that. He does look the part in the little bits I've seen too. A good first touch and a physical presence I thought.

This makes sense.

Quite a combative combo.

If we're going to play with three front men as has been widely reported/guessed, wouldn't we need five decent strikers/front men as opposed to the normal four for two up front formations?

Personally i don't rate Smith anywhere near midfield - for me he is and always will be a centre forward - decent in the air , good distribution but doesn't get enough goals - one thing you would be guaranteed tho is aggression and committment - don't kno why but he is one of those players that i hav always thought wud end up with us.

If he can recapture anything like when he was at leeds i reckon he will do well - Sams not daft - he knows what he wants -- i wud certainly giv him a chance

Welcome to the premiership in the 21st century people, where teams with quality squads win things. You have to remember how we struggled last season because we didn't have strength in depth. As people keep pointing out, Shola is apparently shit so buying Smith would give us 4 main strikers, a minimum if you want to compete, which I assume is what we want to do.

i totally agree, for the first time in many a season we appear to be getting some depth up front, and if smithy wants to do the striker bit again, i am sure he will come up with the goods when required.

The talk today in the North West was of Manchester United striker Alan Smith (pictured right) moving to United in a £3.5m move, which was a surprise to the St James' Park hierarchy.

It was something which caught out both United and Smith's advisors with the former Leeds United striker away on holiday at the moment.

Allardyce himself was at St James' Park today and he has made no secret of the fact that while the get-out clauses are a concern to him, defenders are still his priority.
