Media Centre edition, which isnt much different. I think you need an update from MS for XP. I do remeber when I first installed it that it also asked me to install some .NET stuff too.

have you got the connection to your PC sorted?

Yeah, I'm playing music from the PC no hassle, but I'm missing a step somewhere, have .NET framework installed. The 360 has given me a code I've no idea what to do with, and I've got Windows Media Connect installed, this should not be this difficult. :baby:

sorry mate, we might have to go back a few steps first. What code? is it the code when you first try to run media centre on the 360? You have to download windows media connect from MS and then input the code from the 360 when installing the software on your pc. Im sure for XP theres also an optional update which dl'ds some media centtre code for xp.

If its an error code from trancode 360 then xbox-scene forums has a massive thread on it with all sorts of info.

maybe this'll help

I can't play videos without windows media center 2005, at leat not legitimately, only music and photos. I thought it was a bit odd that I had all this (the music and pictures) up and running without needing that code (you're right, it was the one given by the 360).

You can't play videos without MCE.

I had a feeling you were going to post exactly that earlier; can you PM me details, in the right direction?

plenty of torrents for MCE. Looking at some posts on other forums it looks like there may be problems with installing MCE over XP as an upgrade. Found this on xbox-scene

"You need to search these threads, as this has been answerd like everyday since week 2 of the 360 release.

Keywords: virtual VMware MCE xbox360 Stream "Dual Boot"

VMware is a virtual machine app that will let you run a second OS from your current desktop.

Now go read."

I've no interest in upgrading to MCE, I reckon when it's time to change again I'll move over to FreeBSD or RedHat. Knowing open source stuff it'll be easier to do it through that anyway! :baby:

If Sima's got a relatively easy solution I'll have a go, but it's not the end of the world. Cheers for all the help.

I've completely misread that earlier. You can with "Leghorn", or whatever they're calling it now, but I doubt I'll go that way either. Have you got MCE?

No probs. Thing is Ive seen a number of people say they can get videos streaming with just XP and media connect. You wouldnt have to upgrade with that VMware prog. It just mounts the OS like Virtual CD and by the sound of it you can just click an icon on your desktop to start running MCE

I'll have a look at VMware, of course I can run that on FreeBSD, why doesn't it surprise me that this problem could be solved by abandoning an MS OS?

Cheers.

  • 4 weeks later...

An offer on dial a phone. I normally go for cashback deals but i managed to get the Xbox 360, £70 cashback and a wireless bluetooth headset on a Flext 35 contract. They scrapped that deal a few days after i ordered it and are now offering just the xbox 360 (I think) but a few of the online mobile companies offer similar deals and having checked out a few of them for a few weeks noticed that the value of offers change daily.

Best just to shop around.

I honestly thought there was some catch to getting a "Free" xbox.

As i dont need a new phone yet, is it worth buying a 360 or am i best off waiting for blu-ray & PS3? I dont think i could afford 2 consoles in the space of 6 months (taking on the fact that the ps3 should be here by xmas)

Scottish Mag: How much do you pay for your contract and have you got a link to it?

I am on a Flext 35 contract (£35 a month), as i said on the post they changed the deal after I ordered mine. However ad well as Dial A Phone I think E2save and One stop phone shop have similar offers.

Went out and got a 37" lcd HDTV to take advantage of the the XBOX 360 and the difference is well worth it.

Last night the girlfriend asked if we could watch downloads (lost, etc.) on it, so I hooked it up to the PC. It took care of zapping movies to the xbox and I liked it so much I've kept it plugged in, it's fucking ridiculous.

So have you spunked all that money on the TV for nothing then?

No, I've moved the PC to where the tv is, so I can work from the couch with wireless keyboard and mouse. I'm not sure if there's really any advantage to the mail received noise in dolby digital, though. :quotes:

On another note - has anyone started using the Live Arcade yet? I thought I wouldn't go near it but I'm loving it.
