Guest alex
The library is closed to be demolished and rebuilt I think. Not sure what stage it's at. That tower block you're on about has gone now too I think. There was that awful building opposite (sort of) the station that has been taken down too now. That architect who was obsessed with buildings on stilts had a few in Newcastle.
Meenzer 15871
The library is closed to be demolished and rebuilt I think. Not sure what stage it's at. Met a friend outside Trillians () when I was up the other week and the library building was basically all gone already. There's a gap in the fence where you can look through at the foundations and stuff.
Meenzer 15871
That horrible concrete thing on the corner of Northumberland Street and New Bridge Street wants to be next, mind. Pearl Assurance House I think it's called? Made all the worse by the fact that it's diagonally opposite the really ornate Northern Goldsmiths building. My Mam used to work over at Northumbria University and if I was ever in town meeting her for lunch I used to walk up past the library and over those concrete walkways. Awful, awful shitty hole it was. What gets me is all the people who used to say the Wills factory was a hole. That place had character IMO and I think they've done an awesome job of converting it. Speaking of those cross roads, has the Odeon building gone? It was always a mess when it was in use but last summer it just looked like a fucking hovel. I don't recall anyone saying the Will's building was a hole like. It's always been an amazing building. Difficult to imagine a time when management provided the work force with a full scale theatre! I know all this regeneration has improved the looks of the city but sometimes I feel nostalgic towards the old, gritty city which had so much character. I mean a roof on the Gallowgate? We're turning into Meenzers man.

It's still a hovel, as is most of Pilgrim street.
Gemmill 47153
If there's anyone who would be less suited to a "gritty city" than Renton, I've never met them. I can just imagine him mincing down the mean streets like some sort of dandy. Actually, he's not mincing, he's skipping.

Meenzer 15871
My memories of being dragged around town by my adoring mother as a small child are strangely dark. I'm sure Eldon Square used to be much less bright inside (though it still has those low ceilings in places, which don't help), and then you had the bus concourse and the pervading greyness of the buildings and stuff, I don't know. I'm definitely proud to show the city off to "outsiders" these days, anyway, whereas I don't know if I would have been back in the day.

Remember the 'dark' Eldon Square and seem to remember there was a massive hoo-har when they lightened it up at the area outside Boots, Bainbridges, Burtons etc. The Bus Concourse - oh my word that thing was horrific, you could feel the fumes coming up the escalators outside Bainbridges. Is that still as bad as ever?

Is that still as bad as ever? Think so although exhaust emissions probably aren't as bad nowadays. I think there's some major work being done to that level - the George and Dragon has been shut for years!

Is that still as bad as ever? Completely redeveloped within the last few years I think? I never have reason to pass by that way - sounds daft in a city centre as compact as Newcastle's, but it's true - so I know they were working on it but still haven't seen the end results
Guest alex
There's work being done at the old bus concourse under Bainbridges isn't there? I think Bainbrdiges is being extended. How shit was the George and Dragon btw?
