Mark Viduka is to delay his retirement from the Australia national team after confirming he will play in the Asian Cup next month.

Newcastle United's new recruit had called a news conference with the intention of announcing he would no longer play for the Socceroos.

But the 31-year-old had a change of heart after speaking with coach Graham Arnold.

"It's great news," said Arnold. "We can't hide the fact we have been in discussions with Mark over the last three or fours days about his availability for the Asian Cup. The first indications weren't a good sign.

"However, he's made the decision (to continue with the Socceroos). The first decision was to retire, but after time thinking about it, he's made his availability clear.

"He's totally committed to the shirt and totally committed to the cause."

Viduka captained Australia during the World Cup in Germany last year and is likely to take up the same role again when the Asian Cup gets under way next month.

Next month's 16-team tournament is co-hosted by Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

IHMO it's actually a good thing. He is one of those players that has a tendancy to come back slow after the summer break.

This way he maintains a high level of fitness and won't spend the early part of the season trying to find his touch.

[fancydan]But he's still a fat bastid[/fancydan]

Aye, wait until you get your contract then announce your change of mind.

And of course the obligatary "fat Aussie twat!".

ewerk, this all happened last night.

He was already a Newcastle player by then.

It appears last night he phoned the federation told them he was retiring, then Arnie, the 'stralian coach got on the "blower" and talked wor Marco round.

Something about the best thai green curry pies he's ever had

fookin' lard arse convict!
