Greg Halford insists his move to Sunderland was "forced upon him" by Reading.

Halford made the £3million switch to the Stadium of Light on Monday after spending less than five months with the Royals, for whom he made just three appearances.

The 22-year-old full-back has revealed he was encouraged to speak to the Black Cats by Reading boss Steve Coppell and director of football Nicky Hammond despite wanting to make an impact at the Madejski Stadium.

"The move was forced upon me. Sunderland came in for me and Reading decided to make a bit of profit," Halford told the Daily Mail.

"I met with Steve (Coppell) and Nicky (Hammond) and they said they were 'neutral' and they were going to go on my reaction.

"I wanted to stay at Reading and I was sure I would break into the first team but the manager has his favourites.

"I got the impression they weren't bothered whether I stayed or not and that told me everything, so I caught the next flight to Sunderland on Sunday."

Nice to have someone who's eager to play for you...
