Gym'll fix it for £5.5m Barton

Jun 11 2007

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

Joey Barton is making sure he will be in tip-top condition when his move to Newcastle United finally goes through.

For the Chronicle can reveal that Barton, on holiday in Dubai, is spending much of his time in the gym of his luxury hotel.

Former Middlesbrough striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who is also on holiday, told me from the Middle East today: "It's so hot here that if you are going to have any kind of work-out, it's best to do it early in the morning.

"And even though I got up at the crack of dawn and went to the gym in our hotel, I found that Joey Barton had already beaten me to it.

"I must say that Joey is in great shape and all he wanted to talk about was his move to Newcastle United.

"And I have to say it's a great move for him and a great move for Newcastle United where I am sure he will be a big success."

Barton's switch to St James' Park is still not official as Manchester City continue to baulk at paying the Liverpool-born midfielder any loyalty bonus which he and his agent Willie McKay insist he is entitled to because he did not ask for a transfer.

But Barton has £17m riding on his move to Newcastle in the next five years and there is no way the £5.5m transfer will not go through.

Meanwhile, Michael Owen is also in Dubai with his England colleagues and former Liverpool team-mates Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard in advance of the latter's wedding at the weekend.

But now he has had his two games for England, surely it is time for Owen to come out and tell Newcastle United and their supporters just what his plans are.

There is no chance of Owen re-joining Gerrard and Carragher at Anfield because Rafael Benitez does not want him, and any interest Manchester United and Chelsea may have had has now cooled.

But if Arsenal lose Thierry Henry to Spain or Italy, Arsene Wenger could be tempted to try to replace him with the United striker.

Guest Albuquerque

I reckon Allardyce has got some kind of restraining order placed on Oliver, so he's hired JFH as his mole.

He'd probably get more use from JFK.
