Magpies boss keen to offload inconsistent Babayaro

SAM ALLARDYCE has been warned about the enormity of the problems he faces at Newcastle United and he is working hard on eradicating one by offloading Celestine Babayaro.

The former Chelsea defender has struggled for consistency since joining from Chelsea in January 2005 - and the man who bought him has delivered words of caution to Allardyce.

Graeme Souness, who was sacked in February last year after an uninspiring 18 months in charge at St James' Park, will be an interested observer this summer as Newcastle plan for life under the former Bolton boss next season.

Allardyce has already revealed a masterplan for making massive changes to the way the whole club is run and is eager to ensure the players he has under his wing are all determined to work on achieving success on Tyneside.

Babayaro, however, does not appear to be in those plans and, with Mike Ashley destined to become the club's new billionaire owner, there is a feeling Allardyce will be allowed to make wholesale changes to the squad.

Souness insists that is not something he, nor Glenn Roeder, had the opportunity to do, with the Scot suggesting Ashley must deliver the funding for a number of new faces or Newcastle will never make a return to competing for the Premiership's quartet of Champions League places.

"He (Ashley) is obviously a very wealthy individual, but success will depend on how much money he is prepared to spend," said Souness.

"It will need big money to bridge that gap into the top four because it is an enormous gap. The top four are so far away from everyone else at the moment. It's a very, very difficult job at Newcastle. This is a big football club with big problems."

Babayaro - with few takers at the moment - maybe a player Allardyce would prefer to depart but the Newcastle boss admits he is powerless to prevent Michael Owen leaving, if that is what the England striker wants.

If another club puts in a £9m bid then Owen could decide to turn his back on Newcastle, less than two years after making a record-breaking £16m switch from Real Madrid.

And Allardyce, hopeful of keeping him, said: "If Michael wants to leave then there's nothing I can do about it, especially if another club triggers his release clause. We could suffer because of Michael's clause."

Sam Allardyce is looking to sell Newcastle United misfit Celestine Babayaro as he prepares to complete the free transfer signing of Tal Ben Haim this week.

Babayaro's suspect injury record and his questionable motivation are well known to Allardyce who, despite new owner Mike Ashley's considerable financial backing, still wants to trim the dead wood in his squad.

Like any new manager, Allardyce has always insisted that every player will start with a clean slate at St James's Park under his reign, but he is aware of Babayaro's unpopularity with supporters, as well as his dreadful appearance record since he joined the club in January 2005.

The Nigerian left-back has started just 66 games for the club and, despite former manager Glenn Roeder's patience with him, he made just four appearances in a United shirt after Christmas last season, the last coming against Manchester City at the end of March.

The biggest problem for Allardyce - who will push to make Ben Haim his third signing as Newcastle manager before the centre-back's wedding next weekend - will be trying to find a club willing to sign a player whose talent is undermined by an apparent lack of desire. United would still like a fee for a player who cost them £1m from Chelsea. Babayaro's agent is Willie McKay, who was on Tyneside last week to put the finishing touches to Joey Barton's £5.5m move from Manchester City, and he has been told to try to find another club for Babayaro.

Nevertheless, while Babayaro is not part of Allardyce's first-team plans and with a new left-back - Wigan's highly-rated youngster Leighton Baines is a target - thought to be the manager's main priority once he has signed Ben Haim, it remains to be seen whether the Nigerian wants to quit St James's Park.

The former Anderlecht defender has another year left on his contract and The Journal understands he is willing to let it run down in the reserves and then leave on his own terms in 12 months' time.

However, while Allardyce would like to get rid of Babayaro, he wants to hang on to right-back Stephen Carr. Like Babayaro, Carr is also one of the least popular players among fans and had been expected to leave this summer, with Celtic reportedly interested.

But Allardyce is keen to keep his experience in the squad, even if he is not his first-choice right-back. United's new manager appears to be toying with the idea of playing a 3-5-2 formation next season, with Kieron Dyer as a possible wing-back, but Carr will still be involved if he wants to remain in the North-East. Interestingly, Sunderland and their Irish manager Roy Keane are also looking to sign a right-back this summer and might be tempted to make a bid for Carr. Keane has been linked with virtually every one of his former Republic of Ireland team-mates, although Carr has, as yet, not been one of them.

Meanwhile, United were linked with another host of potential transfer targets over the weekend as Allardyce admitted he cannot stop Michael Owen leaving the club because of the £9m escape clause in his contract. Allardyce said: "If Michael wants to leave, there's nothing I can do about it, especially if another club triggers his release clause. At the moment, we are benefiting from a release clause to get Joey Barton, but we could also suffer because of Michael's clause."

As a result, Allardyce, who has not ruled out the possibility of signing former Arsenal striker Nicolas Anelka, has been linked with another Bolton forward, El Hadji Diouf.

The Senegal international had suggested he wants to leave the Reebok Stadium following Allardyce's departure, while the Magpies are also credited with an interest in their former striker Craig Bellamy, who will leave Liverpool this summer.

Another player reportedly in Allardyce's thinking is Barcelona winger Ludovic Giuly after the 30-year-old French international was told he can leave the Spanish club.

United midfielder Emre has confirmed that Allardyce has asked him about his Turkish international colleague Tunçay Sanli. The 25-year-old left-sided forward, who played against Newcastle in the Uefa Cup last season, is available on a free transfer from Fenerbahçe.

I saw Tuncay play for Turkey U21s at St James years back and he was head and shoulders above every player on the park. Not only was he quick with his feet but he could hold his own physically. Hard to tell how he has progressed since as the Turkish league receives so little coverage over here, but I think he would be a worthwhile addition on a free.

I said a while back i thought at best we'd shift only 1 of Baba and Carr before January because Big Sam can't just dump the entire squad in one go and of the two he was likely to prefer Carr.

Come January and hopefully we'll be goign well, Ashley may release some more cash and Sam can clear out a bit more of the rubbish and bring in another 2-3 players.

I'd piss myself laughing if the mackems came and bought Carr off us, but i can't see Keane rating him unfortunately!

Interesting to note what it says about Sam asking Emre about Tuncay. I know there are quite a few people on the boards who rate him.

That's because we've bought him on FM ;)

We could do without diouf tbh, overrated. Id give bellamy a miss too, the fans are too divided on him and he made the mistake of shitting on his own doorstep when he left.

Id take anelka or guily though, especially if one of martins, owen or ameobi was leaving. We need to be careful we dont end up with a spare 11 players pissed off they arent playing games.

I'll jump for joy the day we get rid of that parasite. With the wages he's on though, he's infinitely more likely to do a Bogarde than go to another club where he would earn a lot less.

Baggio does, for me rather a reason to stay well away from him... ;)

Honestly, I haven't paid too much notice to him. Must have seen him in one or two Turkish internationals, but can't remember his performances. On a free probably not a bad idea, although I am very sceptical about the mentality of Turkish players.

Isn't Tuncay out of contract?

Let's hope Fenerbahce don't release an official YouTube compilation of him as Shepherd might get cash-daft and offer ridiculous brass for him.

Nah, as long as "work" (Arbeit) has nothing to do with football, they are normally alright (and I've played with loads of Turkish players). :D

Don't know if this has been posted but Skysports.com says that Tuncay is being chased by Birmingham and Middlesboro. No mention of NUFC.

That's us fucked then, he'll never want to join us ;)
